Ford Quality?

I bought my first used Super Duty Pickup (2004 with 62,000 miles on clock). Absolutly loved the truck! Had some issues with it, dealer took care of them . Truck is now out of warrenty (60days) by about 2 weeks! Heard some rattling in front end I figure its the U joint near the front tire (was told it was gonna need to be replaced soon), WRONG!! Brought to garage to have it fixed. Phone call from garage tells me the entire front Diff needed to be replaced that the passenger side spring mount was pretty much rotted off and the truck was'nt safe to drive!!! WTF!!! The truck is clean!! No rot on body underneth truck looked pretty clean etc... How could a part like the front Diff Spring perch rot out like that?? Mechanic told me he had never seen anything like this on a vechicle only 8 yrs old. Leave it to me to find the one that did!! After this I'm wondering if I'll ever buy another Ford Super Duty again!! Has anyone heard of this happining??

It does sound odd, but it is an 8 year old used truck.

BTW what kind of warranty lasts almost 8 years?

That is unusual indeed. Depending on where the truck came from, salt or trapped dirt can causes all sorts of rot in places that you usually do not think to look at.
Is this a four wheel drive? Its possible that it was used as a plow or salt truck.
As far as the warranty, this would not cover against corrision, except for the original factor warranty (5 yrs/100K iirc)

it could have been old accident damage that finaly gave way..

somethign of that age and mileage anything could be hiding in its old history.

Sounds like he had a 60 day warranty from the seller. This is a good lesson on taking any used vehicle purchase to an independent shop and having them go over it before purchase.

I did bring it to another independant Mechanic he didnt see the attempted repair that was all painted over. Matter of fact the Mechanic I brought it to today didnt see the attempted repair untill he couldnt line the coller that connects the outer tie rod end to the center link. The person that owned the truck prior to trading it must have done the repair to trade it in. Then it was wholesaled to the dealer I bought it from. Im really mad!! I bought a used truck because I didnt have the money to buy a new one and have to live within my means now I have to try and find a considerable amount of money to repair it!!

I didnt mention that someone tried to repair it only because I cant believe this part rotted out the way it did?? I would have expected the Cab corners, crossmembers, muffler cat or thin sheet metal part to rust out before a big steel plate like this!!

do you know who owned the truck before? maybe the garage 9dealership) made the "band aid" repair? if you can find out who owned the truck you could in good faith ask if they did the repairs. if not then you prob know the dealership did the crappy repairs. if you know as fact they did... call an attorney and make the shop pay.

allllll of that being said... have you contacted the dealership you bought it from to see and ask wtf and will they fix? seems like they should of inspected the vehicle before buying and then selling. you bought it in good faith they should of sold it in good faith as well.

Check into Lemon Laws. Even used vehicles are protected by these laws. When I bought my used SD, the dealer and I had to sign a paper stating that we were both aware of the Lemon Laws and that they would be upheld in a court of law. Just my .02 worth. Good luck my friend.

I had a 96 f150 that had the rear spring hangers rot to where the leaf spring was no longer attached in the rear. Truck was probably 5 or 6 years old. But it had seen lots of salty winter miles. I know they've done a better job at painting (e coating) the frames in the past 5 years. So these things can happen unfortunately. That wasn't a fun repair but I was able to do it.

Leave it to me to ask the obvious question- did YOU physically see the damage? I'm not trying to call the garage into question, but the fact is- there are some crooked ones out there.

We're talking a THICK piece of steel here, and the rest of the truck is clean as far as rust issues go. That sets off all kinds of warning flags to me. I'd do a Carfax first of all just to see if any accidents show up. Then I'd probably try to see if I could get a date code from the axle to make sure it isn't older than the truck.

Something smells wrong here. If the rest of the truck was a rust bucket, I could see it maybe. Even with road salt, there are much thinner pieces of metal that I would see going before the perch (Outer bumper brackets come to mind- they get hammered with road spray).

Lemon laws do not apply to used vehicles.

Yes I did see the Damage and the bogus repair work that was attempted!! And I do agree with you about that area being resonably thick steel. I did do a Carfax. No incidents were reported. Problem is if Crash Damage was'nt reported and it was fixed in some guys backyard it would'nt show up on Carfax?? I'm really at a loss I have to fix it I'm to deep into it now!! I really do love my truck but have to admit this was a real kick in the ***!! Anybody have a front end cheep?? LOL!!

You're correct in that if the damage wasn't reported, it wouldn't show up on Carfax. But it never hurts to check. I did see a front axle on Ebay the other day. Check your area's Craigslist, and of course, the classifieds here. Might also give car-part.com a look to see if a yard near you has one.

If it were me, I'd just weld on a new spring perch. If that's all that's damaged, it's not that big of a job. If you can't find a used one, any halfway decent fabricator can fab one up fairly easily. It's gotta be a hell of a lot cheaper than replacing the whole axle!
