Congratulations kid. I have been through Unity several times in my life. I liked Maine so much, I married a Maniac. Watch out for those Maine women.
Unity is a tiny town just east of Waterville, which really is'nt any big deal at all. You will do better to head toward the coast for Belfast and Camden area for entertainment. Great coastal towns.
You really won't need much entertainment because you will be working your butt off, right?
It is cold, but in Jan and Feb the coldest in that part of Maine maybe 10-20 below at night. Otherwisew snow from Novemebr to April. Great Snow sledding, hunting, fishing, hiking etc. Check out the Allagash on the weekends, and also Moosehead lake. It is true wilderness so you must be careful.
You picked a great state for Wildlife Biology. There will be a lot of bookwork, but once you are past the first two years, you will have a better time of it. Be patient and don't get distracted. Keep your eyes on the prize, so they say. Good luck and keep in touch next September.
Good going, Maine is an excellent place to live, play, and learn. Excellent state for hunting and snow mobiles. Just do not make the mistake of speeding or blowing stop signs and get out of the way of logging trucks.
Maine is a nice place. I grew up just outside of Augusta, so you won't be too far from there. I haven't been back there in a while, but one thing to keep in mind- don't go in the ocean. It's really cold, like 40* year round. One nice place to go is Lake St. George, I think it's in Palermo. Right off Rt. 3, about halfway to Belfast from Augusta. In South China, there is a sign with all the different towns names that are also well-known places. You can travel to Paris, Mexico, China, etc, without ever leaving the state! Summers get kinda hot and humid, can run upwards of 90*, and there are lots of bugs. If you take a dryer sheet, and fold it up and stick it under your hat, that will keep most of them away. Have fun, and enjoy yourself. It's a fun place to be.
Oh I am not worried about the wilderness because that is my back yard and you have to be careful all the time. I am kinda worried about the cold because my truck doesn't like it. It gets cold here but it doesn't stay to long, maybe 5-7 days. It can snow here from september to june, depending where you are in the state.
