hey all, I got a strange one. 03 expl 4x4 xlt, started making a weird sound, almost like a rubbing, or a light griding, comparable to the sound and seat of the pants feel you would get if say you ran out of good brake lining and were creeping the car forward at half mph while dragging the breaks slightly but (except it is when you are stopped and in P). Break pads are fine, just when you come to a stop and put it in park. lasts for about 1-3 seconds. no tranny slippage or other issues yet, all seems to be working. dont use 4x4 hardly at all but not in last 6 months since therer is no snow. since it is so short i cannot pop the hood to track it down.
any ideas? torque converter? fan clutch? help!!!...
Does it make the same noise if you shift to neutral rather than park? How many miles are on it? If it were my truck, I'd start by draining and visually inspecting the transmission fluid, then remove the pan and transmission filter, replace and refill. I'd also drain and inspect the fluid in the transfer case and refill with fresh to see if that helps the situation.
New data,
Isolated it to not be drive line. When it happens the idle jumps from 750rpm to about 900 rpm, every time, only hear sound while vehicle is stopped in gear or in park. Only lasts for about 2-3 seconds, then returns to normal as the idle returns to about 750rpm. It sort of sounds a little like a bad berring in the engine accessories, but you only hear the sound when the idle jumps on its own, not when you manualy raise the idle to 900rpm... Still open to ideas, no dash indicator lights triggered. and the funny thing is it appeared in both my 03 exploders around the same time. ambient temperature is about 55-65 degees.
