No Lights

I have no low-beam lights. The hi-beam lights will work, only by "holding" the low-beam/hi-beam (turn signal) switch in the "temporary-on" position. About 3 weeks ago, the low-beam lights would not work. Maybe 4 days later, they began working again, this lasted for about 7 days. My low-beam lights are now out again.
Is there anyone out there who can give a fella a few ideas as to resolving this most irritating issue?
Thanks very much for reading. Have a great day.

Welcome to the forum!

What year is your Explorer? There are some model years that are known for weak wiring for the headlights. Do you have a test light or multimeter? Is so, that along with a wiring diagram of the headlight system should allow you to quickly find the issue.

Same thing is happening to my 93 Explorer.
Joel did you find out anything?
My son figured out that if you hold the the low-beam/hi-beam (turn signal) switch in the "temporary-on" position and turn the light **** off and on that the low beams usually will remain on after you release the switch.

My initial suspect would be the multifunction switch. But no stores I'm aware of are giving them away, so a few tests with a multimeter could diagnose it.

Thank you Rod. Sounds easy but I've not done much elec. testing before. Would you test the switch itself for voltage or continuity or test somewhere else?

I'd start with the wiring diagram and look for relays and connectors that are easy to get to, then start taking measurements in key places. I'm replacing the multifunction switch on a co-worker's Taurus tonight for a turn signal issue. The three or so that I've changed on Fords so far have all been pretty easy to access, but would not be all that easy to backprobe. Checking voltages at connectors under the dash or under the hood would probably be better places to start.

If you want the headlight wiring diagram for your '93, send me a Private Message with the request AND an e-mail address for you and I'll send you the PDFs.
