My check engine light came on recently in my 4.0L 08 ranger. When I took it to Kragen to have them see what the code was it said it was taking too long to warm up to operating temp. I have noticed that is is running slightly cooler than normal, even once it is driven for a long time. I am thinking the thermostat is stuck open. My problem is I want to be sure that it is the thermostat and not a faulty sensor telling the thermo to stay open. I am not sure if the sensors in the cooling system even work that way.
I have an extented warranty, but it has a deductible so if it is the thermostat it would be much cheaper for me to just fix it myself. If it is a sensor, then I would rather take it in and pay the deducible. Can I be sure that it is the thermostat?
Depending on the mileage on truck the emission control warranty may cover it without deductible if it happens to be a sensor triggering the light. Check your emission warranty booklet to verify. Check your extended warranty for all the exclusions (there tend to be a lot) as am not sure the thermostat would be covered. As for the stat are you noticed a dramatic difference in the heat from the heater? If so that would more likely indicate the stat.
