I know there's many of these posts, can't seem to match my issue. 75mph, ses light came on, engine died. Towed home. rpl'd cps, chkd fuses, chkd hpop oil level, disconnected icp(no oil in connector)chkd pcm connector. wts light works, no tach movement, no obd faults, no smoke. turns over fine, batteries new. 2000 f350 7.3 automatic. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Have you tried checking fuel flow? No smoke indicates no fuel to me...Open the fuel bowl drain and get turn the engine over. You should get a lot of diesel spewing out. If not, make sure the fuel pump runs when you turn the key on the KOEO position. It should run for 20 seconds or so, then shut-off. If it does run, then maybe the pickup screens in the tank are plugged.
Thanks, Neal. Will check the drain port. Pump does run when key turned on. Lack of tach movement seems to point back to cps, according to previous posts I've read.
You probably did a lot of cranking trying to get it started when it first died. Now make sure you have 10.5 volts WHILE cranking to start.
No smoke is also a sign IDM is not firing the injector solenoids and it needs 10.5 volts to do so.
That is NOT the sensor I got from the parts guy. it was grey with pt #f7tz-12k073-b. It matched the one I took out. Could that be an issue?
NO, not if it is a good CPS. It should still start. The grey one(pt #f7tz-12k073-b) is just an earlier replacement. That is the same part number they used as a replacement during the CPS recall in late 2007. They caused some phantom DTC codes and CCT failures on #8. The new DU-87 seems to have solved those problems. I really believe they should have sold you the DU-87. The parts guy probably doesn't even know the difference.
Just a quick update. First, thanks to everyone for their help. Still not fixed. Read another thread that said without a tach signal, it won't start. Focused on that. swapped out relays 30 and 32. replaced cps sensor with black one. checked connections, no help. Was going to chk wiring from cps to 42 pin connector, but couldnt read any pin numbers on connector to get a starting point. Stock motor, no chip. Wouldn't be so bad, but I've only put 5 miles on this truck!
How did it die? Spit and sputter or like someone shut the key off? You said no OBD faults. What did you use to try to pull the codes (96 and newer OBDII code readers won't pull engine codes on this motor). No smoke out the tailpipe at all while cranking? I don't suppose you have access to a scanner capable of monitoring live data?
