Chris, it died like turning off the key. No smoke when turning over. The code reader is newer but a friend used it to read codes on his 2000 7.3. Will see if I can access a live data scanner. Thanks for the reply. Nice to see the eagle globe and anchor.

How much fuel do you have ? Did you have fuel coming out of the drain valve on the filter when you opened it ?

That usually means electrical or sensor related.

That means the injectors are not firing when cranking.

An OBDII scanner will pick up generic codes but not engine specific codes. See if you can find out what type of scanner he has. Also try unplugging the ICP sensor and starting. Then scan it again and see if P1280 shows up from trying to start with the ICP unplugged. If it doesn't, you need to find a better scanner. You might also check the tin nut on the back of the IPR and make sure that didn't fall off, or make sure you don't have any chaffed wires on the ICP sensor or the IPR.

Watch RPM, ICP psi, IPR duty % and battery voltage while cranking. You need to see at least 500 psi from the ICP for the truck to start.

You might also try an injector buzz test to see if any more codes pop up or to see if all 8 injectors buzz.

Chris, thanks for sticking with me on this. The scanner I have now only reads the 5 parameters. Will check for another tomorrow. Both batteries are new and I keep putting the charger on. Rpm seems to stay about 150. Did disconnect icp sensor and tried starting, no help. Will the pcm set faults if the engine is only turning over, not running? If so, shouldn't I see some fault on this scanner? Regards, Fred

It won't always set faults. It depends on what the issue is. You might try cranking for 20 seconds straight to see if it will trip any codes. Sometimes a normal crank isn't long enough to trip a code. Just be sure to let the starter cool down for a minute between starting attempts. Also keep the batteries on a charger. If voltage drops too low while cranking, the IDM won't fire the injectors.

If you find a scanner that can watch the appropriate data this should help.

7.3L Powerstroke Starting Requirements:

Battery voltage a minimum of 10.5 volts while cranking
RPM at least 100 while cranking. (If no tach movement suspect CPS)
If you have a scan tool ICP should be 500 PSI ± 25 PSI
Fuel pulse width should be 1 to 6 milliseconds.

NOTE: The above requirements assume the following:

Correct oil level, oil type and pressure
Correct type of fuel
Correct fuel pressure (53 PSI per Ford spec)
Sufficient air supply (clean air filter & unobstructed intake)
Proper oil level in HPOP reservoir (1 to ¾ inch from top)
Proper glow plug relay and glow plug operation (in cold weather)
Proper injection timing (PCM controlled)

Thanks for the info. Should have a scanner that reads everything tomorrow, if we don't get snowed in. Hopefully that will give me the info to figure out the problem.

Ok, icp pressure is 2100, ipr duty cycle 41, rpm 145, fuel pulse width 5. Buzz test showed tach movement like it should, but didn't hear the buzz. Then showed faults p1293 and p1294. Could both of the valve cover harnesses failed at once?

You did't hear any buzzes at all? Sounds like an IDM failure.

I guess that would explain the very high icp pressure. Would a bad idm trip the bank 1 and bank2 injector high side open faults?

Ok, pin E on the valve cover connector reads 2.25 vdc with the key on. Wiring diagram says its high voltage. Is this voltage right? If not, I think the IDM is bad. And that looks like a pain to replace.

I don't have any info on voltage testing. But the IDM is not hard at all to change. Remove inner fender, 2 bolts and it's out.
