Well guys, the 78 F-150 I bought needs a lot of work and now I see it just wont make it through the winter. So I parked it aside and have been looking at trucks. Found a 78 F-150 with a diamond plate flatbed and an old simple plow. Needs an exhaust and the passenger side door needs some linkage work. Looks like it could either a good source of transportation or even a good base to make a show truck. I seen cab corners got some attention, floor pans replaced, and it was painted. Just a quick paint job but don't look too bad.
37,000 original miles and stock 351M with a C6. Shortbed frame standard cab...
I don't really know what kind of value it has. What do you guys think? I get a fair deal. I gave up a motorcycle and $2400 cash... combined value of about $4000.
Nice truck is that pinstriping down the dent or are my eyes playing tricks on me but it looks like someone painted maybe barb wire down the side of the truck. Looks good! I love the interior nothing nicer than a dent side with clean factory interior. Congrats!!!
Yes, barbed wire pin stripe... and the interior in my other 78 is nicer. This has some crack on the top vinal and the drivers seat is torn pretty good. But other than that and the mentioned exhaust and passenger door linkage this seems pretty solid. I'll be picking her up in a few weeks. I'm pretty excited about this one. I'll have to send pics, but looking at the rear leafs it looks like they already might have added a couple extra to hold that flatbed. If not I'll have to do that myself. That is a lot of weight without a load. When I top it off with firewood or iron bars I'm worried about the stress back there.
It's 4x4 isn't it? looks like it is but it just sits so low
Yeah, it's a 4x4. I told him after seeing this truck I was thinking I had a lift on mine after all. But I think from that heavy flatbed and the plow on it it needs a heavy duty suspention added.
That and the tires are dinky. Those wheel wells could be filled out a little as well with bigger tires, that'd probably bring it up to stock height, which I'm positive is higher than where it sits.
I'm sure the rear would clear no problem. I got some old 33's I could slap on, but I don't know how they will tuck into the front... there is only one way to find out haha.
Well, my Supercab has a few extra leafs in the back. I think I should be able to get those on the flatbed and have the fronts redone by the same guys. Standard Welding in Lorain, Ohio has been good to me. I found out about them after snapping my driveshaft in my 89 Bronco when I was 18. They have been at my service for the last 10+ years.
So what do you guys think? A shortbed and longbed have the same rear springs?
Ok, I will slap on those 33's and take a measurement of the springs.
What do you think about the price? There are a few hidden rust spots in the cab. Floor pans replaced with the inserts, but the old rot is still there. Cab corners were done, looks nice. Then consider the 37,000 original miles, diamond plate flatbed, 351M/C6, and a newer but not pro paint job... What would you guess? Frame is totally solid, surface rust looks like it has only taken thousandths off no holes in any brackets. Needs a full exhaust and the passenger door wont open from the inside. Guy was asking $4000, I am giving up a bike in the $1200-$1500 range and another $2400 on top of that. But have not sealed the deal. If you have any input let me know. We took it for a spin and it feels great. I just don't want my feelings of excitement make a bad move for me. I can't wait to get it here. It's over a 2 hour drive and I almost rode it to his house in the cold just to get it here. But I am going to wait and trailer it over... and this is my chance to change the terms of the trade... Any opinions are valuable as heck right now so please let me know what you think!
Thanks!
Edit: He was asking $4500...

Reason: $Amount
no prop, IMO, coming from northeast ohio, that truck looks to be about a $2000 truck. But, then there's the fact that the miles are low, it runs/drives "good", frame is good, and body is good, then that can raise the price a bit. My thing is that it doesn't have a bed. I wouldn't want it if it had a flat bed but that's me. What it comes down to is had bad to want it and how much are you willing to pay for it. I'd say go for it but just try to get the best deal that you can. Price varys a lot for these trucks from place to place.
Thanks NW.. That is a big help. Gives me an edge when going in for the final wheelin'n dealin'. This way I can do things like ask for $100 off for gas because I am doing all the driving to get the trade done. I actually want a flatbed. This way my loads can be more diverse. More of a bummer that it is a shortbed. I'll work my magic.
Ok I changed my mind... tried to get him to go lower. My bike and $2000 but he wouldnt do less than $2200. I say my bike in the market could get $1500 easy. He says he paid $4000 for the truck, I told him he overpaid and I wont do the same. And he at least admitted he overpaid. So I said tops I would give is $2000 and my bike and that it was a good deal for him. He is set on getting what he paid for the truck.
Thanks guys, that really helped me not overpay. I would rather go out of state for a better deal than settle.
Well, got it for a bit less and with some perks. He will do the hauling and driving and take less cash for it. I think he came down to a fair deal. Might have it this weekend. I'll share what I find as I crawl all over her.
