'92 E40d
Not engaging in 1st gear when in drive, when it does engage, it goes in and out of gear. All other gears work 100% fine . Pan was half empty on fluid but the tranny does not leak. I was thinking modulator valve along with fluid in the lines until all the shops in my area are telling me there is no modulator valve on the e40d and folks are telling me the mod. valve was ditched in 94, mine is a 92. The only thing the shops will say is that I need $1600 for a rebuild. Is there a modulator valve on a '92? The fluid was not brown and did not stink, no metal chunks. Running a 92 f150 5.0 e40d xlt extended bed 122k miles (no problems until now). thanks

No E4OD has ever had a modulator valve.
The only two places the fluid can go is to leak on the ground or leak into the radiator from the oil to water cooler inside the radiator.
With the radiator COLD, remove the cap and see if there is oil floating on top of the coolant.
