I am toying with the idea of putting a winch on the front of my X. I am looking for the least obtrusive way to mount it. I would like to keep it looking close to stock, I'm not really interested in a complete replacement winch bumper. Any ideas? I'm also not a huge fan or a receiver mount, I just want it to stay on there. All that I would use it for is putting my dock in and taking it out, not looking for a serious recovery setup.
Another option that I am looking at is to put a front hitch on my X and then getting a "hitch mount" like this: My thought is I can move it from the X to the CJ7 to the tractor when I get one. Wiring shouldn't be to difficult.
That transformer kit is easy to put on from what I've seen. I remember seeing an install on it when it came out back in like 2000 or so, just pretty much bolts on. But the hidden one is AWESOME. I saw 2 ex fed trucks for sale when I was looking for my ex and both of them had the hidden kit, warn 12k winches, and the bumper moved forward 2", along with what I guess were Fx4 F250 springs and shocks and 33's. Looked so clean the only way you could tell the winch was there was the slight bumper moved forward and the fairlead in the middle.
Of course there are the pricey road armor and fusion bumpers that look awesome, but a forum member bent his frame with one of those installed, perhaps because they don't give any in a collision and solidly link the frame rails, which, though counterintuitive, can actually hurt the factory designed crash structure. They are also a couple thousand bucks.
I already have a giant bolt on brush guard thing on my truck, it came with it, and since I've had it I actually really like not having to worry so much if I get too close to a shopping cart, or hit a small animal, or whatever. But if you like the way your truck looks stock, the warn hidden system is the way to go.
