96 explorer alarm going off

I have a 96 explorer XLT 4.0 4 wheel drive. The alarm will start honking the horn after the alarm has been activated. It usually takes a few hours then it goes off. I was in extreme temps and was thinking that was it. I am in another state now and it's not that cold here. Could it be a battery in the fob? I have gone to each door and rear hatch to make sure nothing was left open. Any Ideas?

The battery in the fob will not cause the alarm to go off.

To start with, is this the Ford factory security system or an aftermarket alarm? Does the Door Ajar indicator ever come on when you're driving the truck? Have you tried cleaning the door pin switches with electrical contact cleaner?

Yes It is a factory alarm. No the door ajar light does not come on while driving. I have not tried cleaning the door pins w/ elec. cleaner. Thanks for the tip. Really strange it may go for 3 weeks and no problems, then it acts up. I have a friend that said he was having the same problem with a GM car he has. He bought a new battery for the fob and had the dealer reprogram the factory alarm.

i had a similar problem with a lincoln mark VIII i had. my problem was the keyless entry pad on the drivers side door just under the handle, some moisture got into the door and messed with the circuit board. not sure if your truck has it or not, but thats something else i would check.
