I have two horns in my 51 5 Star Extra. When I got the truck, only the driver's side worked, until I slightly turned the adjusting screw on the passenger side horn. Then, voila, they both worked for months.
Yesterday, I rewired the horn relay. Everything worked fine.
Today, I rewired the horns from the horn relay. The passenger side appears to be shorted to ground. If I wire the drivers side horn separately, it works. But if I connect the passenger side, nothing works. And the passenger side won't work by itself.
So, I'm thinking about trying to fix the horn. Has anyone disassembled one of these trumpets before?
And I know this is the drivers side, but I don't have a good pic of the bad one.
Do a search for Julie and horn - He (Julie is a guy named Dan) took em down to reeds and even re-tuned em with a xylaphone (sp?). I'm a 48 guy so didn't have the nice big trumpets, just swapped 6v to 12v, but ran across several of his threads and I believe he posted tear down, reassembly, wiring, 6v conversion - everything.
Thanks Bryan. I read all that. I think I screwed it up by trying to loosen the bolts to take it off. They were painted stuck, so I quit trying. I'm sure I've interrupted the ground, so the horn can't work. That makes perfect sense. Too late to try it tonight...
It's fixed. Was a self-inflicted problem. When I tried to take the horn off, I interrupted the ground. Refurbished the horns today, and everything works fine. I'm posting pics on my build thread.
