headlights very dim (help)

hello guys,

i replaced my sealed beam headlights with the plastic housing ones because of how dim they were. i installed the new lights and they are still very dim, seems even worse than before, there is little difference between the daytime running lights and the low beams. in order to see anything while driving i must drive with the high beams on, also my high beam light on the dash is lit when the high beams are not on but its very faint. anyone know of common ground problems?

any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks

If both ( sealed beam and composite ) are dim check your voltage going to them should be around 12 - 12.5 also there is a wiring harness you can purchase that will run directly from your battery allowing 13-14 volts to the bulbs.

There is a upgraded " plastic " housing for early F-250's that have the Jeweled ( euro ) look to them that is a huge improvement over the defused style that came on the early F-250's 99-2002.

the ones that i purchased are the 04 style, is that the euro ones? i will check the voltage first thing in the morning. where can you purchase the wire harness? would the bad ground be the one off of the headlight connector?

thanks

I would also check the grounds for both lights. Sounds like the low beams are seeking ground thru the high beams thus the dash light being on with low beams.

Yes, the 2004 are better headlights then the early 2000 ones.

Should be a 9007 here is a link for a kit that will work ( never tried one so dont know about the quality )

Yes a bad ground can and will also cause the problem.

I have one light that kept going dim. pulled out the plug and looked at it. the center wire in the plug got pushed back a bit and was not making a good ground. i took a little screw driver and bent the tab a little then pushed it back in.. works great now..

do you mean the ground that is directly off of the light socket?

Yes that would be it! Use a voltmeter or test lamp between it and battery neg. terminal.
