Hey, I'm thinking about installing a performance cam in my 74 f250 it has a390 fe engine and its stock except for exaust I'm just trying to figure out a good cam for a nice lopey sound and what else needs to be changed in order to accommodate the new cam. Thanks for all your help....
i ordered the edelbrock cam kit matched to my rpm intake. it came with lifters & springs. mostly a mid rpm deal- sounds good, slight lope. a good match for the 390 with 36" tsl's and lots of muddin in shallow holes
We can all give you our opinions, but I would call the cam manufacturer. They recommend cams all day. On an otherwise stock 390, something like the Lunati 62001LK or Comp XE256H would be what you're looking for. Do you have headers? Cause without them you won't see the expected gains from a cam swap.
Get the kit with the cam/lifters/springs and you'll be set. Ask the manufacturer if a different length pushrod is needed and if it is they'll direct you to the right length. Or you can measure clearances yourself and determine what length pushrod to use. If it's never been apart to have been decked, head milled, or a head gasket changed then the pushrod they suggest will work just fine. If it has I'd measure it.
If sound is ALL you want then you could try one of the Comp Thumper cams. Alot of bark without much bite though.
