Timing Chain Set ID
Is there any way to identify a Non retarded timing set has been install without tearing it open? I just bought the truck and have no idea if it was done along the way. Truck runs great so I don't want to waste the time and money if I don't have to.

You could with the timing specs and an accurate timing degree wheel. By taking off the front motor accessories to get the wheel on and make it accurate, but by then you have most of the work done to change the timing set. In my experience most people know nothing about an advanced gear set, so even someone who just rebuilt the motor did not install a good gear set. If they cant tell you, it most likely is a retarded set.

Ok thanks. Me and my dad have identical trucks but he bought his new. 78 f150 4x4 short beds. His has stock 351m and mine has stock 400. Mine will sit there and lay down posi for 6 ft or so. This is my third truck with a 400 and just seams too run real strong.
