I have the same issue. I start the truck, wait about 30 seconds, drive away, for about the first mile, it will tick like hell. Then it's quiet. I run mobile 1 10w/40 and a mobile 1 filter. I hope its just the oil. I really dont want to do headers now, let alone have a stud thats broken in pretty far.

I have the same issue too. Currently running Amsoil 5W30 with the Amsoil filter and have run that combo since 100k. The noise only started for me in the last 15k or so, maybe less.

Prior to that, from 84-100k, I was running Mobil 1 5W30 and the Motorcraft filter and didn't have the sound then either.

The noise has been happening more and more frequently in the last couple months. I do mostly highway, so it warms up, stays warm, then gets home and doesn't usually start again until it's really cooled down or still quite warm. However, going out to work on the project over Christmas, it cooled down quite a bit while I was out there and it would make the noise when I went to leave.

I've been meaning to get under and check the exhaust studs, but I've been waiting for a dry, relatively warm day to be able to do it. It can keep doing it all it wants before I'm going to lay down in a pile of slush and mud to look.

I am a fan of Mobil 1 that's all I run in my 12 cyl Benz. But my v10 ex didn't like it.

I think the X burns mobile 1 but doesn't burn conventional oil. I like running synthetic though.

The 5w 20 motorcraft is a synthetic blend... In other words not full synthetic.

Nice. Do you have the 20" wheels? I have gone through several tires due to small potholes and blowing tires out. I have setteled with mercedes and they GAVE me a full set of tires of my choice and will not replace them under warranty anymore. I am willing to get rid of the 20" wheels and get some 18's from a s550 and not have to worry about tires for a while. I dont mind buying tires because they are worn but buying them because I blew another one out really tick me off. OK,BACK ON TOPIC NOW. SORRY MODS...

That's awfully heavy oil for that engine. It was OK 30 years ago when the ol' Chevy 283 got tired but not this this engine. I was inclined to do that also but settled on 5W-20.

It's a leaking exhaust manifold stud or studs. Once it warms up the metal expands thus sealing it.

With oil that heavy, I would bet it is a lifter, if not an exhaust leak.

If you are sure it's not an exhaust tic then its probably just the lifters. Its colder out and the oil is a bit thinker in the morning. If it goes away pretty quick I would probably not worry about it.
