New here, Steering q's

Hello. I just bought a pretty mechanically sound 1976 F250 4x4 with 4 speed manual trans. The power steering system is strange to me. Or should I say new?
The gear box moves a pitman arm through the frame on the drivers side that pushes and pulls a hydraulic control valve feeding to the hydraulic cylinder mounted on the front of the Dana 44 pushing and pulling the tie rod. I was searching through LMC at pictures, and I cannot quite see the same system pictured. Seems like an over complicated system. There are 4 lines going to and from the control valve mounted to the pitman arm. A pressure line from the pump, and return to the pump, and a right and left cylinder line to the hydraulic cylinder mounted up front. I am not new to hydraulic systems, and don't fear the system really. Just ignorant.

Two questions.

*How reliable is this system on the trail?

*Where do I find rebuild kits/bushings for the valve and cylinder? LMC does not seem to list it correctly, or I am looking at it wrong.

If I need to take pictures I can upload them.

Thanks for any information, I look forward to spending many hours reading up on the wealth of information here. My ignorance to the older generation Ford trucks will keep me busy. If I already missed a FAQ, I must have done a poor search. But, at least I can say I tried. haha

That is the factory Hydraulic Assist steering. The main problem with the system is the geometry of the setup and the difficulty finding parts to repair when necessary. The push/pull design leads to bumpsteer when the axle articulates. OK for light trails, straight line mud running, and street use, but not what you want if for anything more than that. With enough articulation you can get into a situation where you turn the wheel and nothing happens.
The seal kit for the cylinder is almost impossible to find. And to buy a rebuilt cylinder or control valve is $$$$! You can get them (sometimes, if they have any) from NPD (national parts depot). They use Lares to rebuild them, which I think you can deal with directly though I don't know if it's any cheaper.
It's often cheaper to switch to some type of crossover steering which will eliminate bumpsteer, and will be easier to find parts for later. A member here HIO Silver has a good cost analysis to convert it to the newer 78/79 style. If I remember right it was something like around or under $300 to switch with the aid of the JY.
Cost for rebuilt cylinder $225 with a $500!!! core charge for 74-77 Bendix style
Cost for control valve assembly also 225 + 500 core.
You can see pics on NPDs online catalog pg. 85
If your driving conditions don't require much flexing and your system works I'd stick with it. Mine works just fine and turns the bigger tires with ease. If it's leaky or you're looking to do more serious offroading, do yourself a favor and make the swap.

Try a search for "hydro/power assist" or "highboy steering". Lots of threads on it.

Just looked in your garage and you mentioned thinking it had a leveling kit. Probably standard highboy suspension. The 67-77(before serial #Y20001) F250 4x4 sat higher than the later model 4x4s (sometimes called "lowboys") had divorced transfer cases, narrower rear frames widths, and narrower rear leafs. Does it sit the same as mine? Cause that's factory ride height

Oh and Welcome aboard! Let's see some pics!!

Awesome reply. That exactly what I wanted to know. Off to the salvage yards this weekend anyway. I will post plenty more when project unfolds. Uploaded the only picture I have from the night I bought it and put gas in it. Looks like I came into a wealth of info here.

Hey Guys,
I'm in the same situation. 76 F250 4x4. Was hoping I could just replace the Control Valve
Ball stud with a kit that Stangersite sells. (99.00) and not replace the whole CV.
I see that my power cylinder is leaky though, so maybe I'll look up Hio Silver's upgrade.

Why dont' the sell just the bushings for the drag link, instead of the whole dang thing?
Check out my garage. Scotty

Hey Sleepy,

I looked for HIO Silver's steering upgrade post. Have not found it under 'members' or through general search. Where is it?

Thanks,
Scotty

I PM'd him for ya. (have to have 25 posts to get or send private messages) I never have very good luck using this search function either. He should chime in sometime today I imagine.

Steering upgrade for 76 F250 Highboy

Thanks, Sleepy, and a major thank you to you Number Dummy.
Very fortunate to have your help.

After seeing the word 'obsolete' several times, I must say that I'm leaning heavily toward
a serious upgrade. I found a company called 'Benchworks Steering' out of AZ that offers a complete kit that eliminates the hydralic ram and funky steering box/pitman arrangement. It looks pretty good, although expensive ($1008.00).

I'm trying to weigh the expense of finding the 77-79 donor truck, and the labor to
mod the frame rail, etc. vs. just popping for this highly touted kit.

Hope to read something from Hio Silver that comes in under that number.

Scotty

Went ahead and ordered the system from Benchworks. I wanted to try and cobble together all the parts, but as NumberDummy said, nobody carries the ram cylinder rebuild kit, and altogether, I think the power assist was funky when it was new.

Benchworks solution is to use the steering gear out of an older, 2WD Ford truck (rebuilt), coupled with a new pitman, draglink, intermediate steering shaft and hoses and that's it.
I get to throw away the hydralic ram AND the control valve completely. Hopefully, this will clean up the steering. I will post my experiences with pics later.

Thanks for your suggestions and help,
Scotty

Ahoy my fellow FTE'ers. Sorry for the late reply but my office's IT folks block forums using specific scripts. Unfortunately, FTE is one of 'em.

Here were my costs to retrofit an integral PS system from a 79 Bronco to my 73 F100 4x4. Wouldda been less but the reamer cost me $70:

Nice Steering upgrade

Excellent work Silver,

Basically a $650 dollar savings over what I purchased today.

I'm not certain that the F100 relates to the F250 and the Bronco the way yours did, but I'm glad it worked out so well for you.

Your truck looks great. But then, I get glassy-eyed looking at pretty much any nicely kept vintage Ford.

Thanks for the info,

Scotty

Yeah, I was wondering why my retrofit was cited when it was for a half-ton. In any case, I simply responded.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Have fun with your swap... that's some good gear yer getting. It took alot of *** scratching trying to figure out what I needed to do.

Depending on how the knuckles on the front axle are setup, you may also be able to convert to a 77.5-79 F250 4x4 "push-pull" style setup.

The steering boxes are available remanufactured for around $300.
The "drag link" (the bit that pushes and pulls the driver knuckle) is around $65 new.

I don't know if you'd need to replace the tie-rod - I think the factory one would work.

Aside from that, you'd just need to get hoses to adapt your power steering pump to the new steering gear.
