I have a 99 Ranger XLT 4X4 Ext Cab 4.0L . I think I need a new fuel pump. What is the easiest way to get at the pump, drop the tank or remove the bed? Thanks in advance
Don't remove the bed, just tilt it up and prop it in place. Six rather large torkx bolts, brake and license plate light wires, fuel tank fittings, and lift it up.
Do a search before asking questions, and you'll save yourself some time rather than wait for people to take THEIR time...

the MO around here is to DX first.......Why do you think you need a FP?
I have to turn the key to the on position for several seconds before trying to start the the engine. If I don't it cranks a long time before starting and I'm concerned about damaging the starter. The truck runs fine after starting.I was leaning toward a bad check valve in the pump that is letting all the gas to drain back to the tank which would require a new pump. Any other thoughts ?

change the fuel filter........then put a bottle of techron in each of the next full tanks........then do a series of fuel pressure test.......
If you have a circulating system that returns excess fuel to the tank, the check valve in the fuel pressure regulator may have given up the ghost. It would allow the pressure to drop to zero, in addition to the check valve in the fuel pump being the other possibility along with drizzling injectors...

Just wanted to let you guys know I had the fuel pump along with a new fuel filter replaced after the it finally died. The guy charged me $150 ( I supplied the parts) .He dropped the tank,he said it was easier than lifting the bed. The truck never started better. Thanks again for your help.
