I have a 2000 f250 v10 that does everything I need but am looking to down grade trucks. I have a company truck I drive everywhere so Im not looking for a daily driver, just something to pull a 28ft 5th wheel and some rzrz to the mountains 7-8 times a year.
I am debating on the older mid 90s 2-350 with a diesel idi motor for fuel milage reasons (17-18 mpg empty) and I really just want a cheap $5-6 truck and I like the body style on ford better than chevy
My question is will it perform as well as my v10 for what I want to do with it? I have never drove one with out a turbo so I dont know about pulling up hills.
My previous truck was a '94 F350 idi turbo, 5 speed, 4x4, 4.10 gears and my current 2001 f250 V10 auto 4x4 4.30 gears runs circles around it, empty or loaded. The IDI will get the job done, but the V10 does it better.
A early 90's IDI does not get near 18mpg more like 14-15 range with the 7.3. Its a good engine but will be slow for what you will need it for. Go down to the IDI forum here!
We are running a 94.5 7.3 IDI turbo yet as well. Like mentioned they don't have much umf but they will do the job and run forever. I'd go with the 00-03 7.3 any day over anything else ford has offered in the last 20 years. Best diesel ever built bar none. Even better than those rattle trap cummins people brag about. Worth the extra couple grand in my book!
