Talking Mysterious 390!

Long story short i found water in my oil during my last oil change, so i pulled the "360" out of the highboy to start the tear down and find the culprit. After i pulled everything I decided I would check the stroke for ***** and giggles, turns out I have a 390. so that made my day, and in the process of doing all that i also noticed that the cross hatch from the last honing was still there. Now this truck has been in the family forever, my uncle says he remembered the truck getting a new clutch back in eighth grade and that was 22 years ago. He never remembered the engine getting swapped, I guess that story is lost to history. Doesn't bother me any, all i have to do is re gasket the thing and I'm good as gold

It ended up being the timing cover gasket.

The engine code is the 4th digit of the VIN

1968/72 F100/350: A = 240 I-6 / B = 300 I-6 / G = 302 2V (1969/72 F100 only) / H = 390 2V / Y = 360 2V.

390's were not factory installed with 4WD. 1968/76 F100/250 4WD: The only available V8 was the 360, 2V's only offered.

timing cover gasket ? correct me if i am wrong but water pump sits over timing cover and connects to block at three points- two sides (like chevy) and short hose at top .

Yes but if the gasket was gone leakage from anything such as rain or that little radiator hose leaking could get in there and get into your oil. I'm thinking this is why the front of the engine was so greasy.

'Short' aka 'little radiator hose' = By-pass hose.
