I am in the middle of doing the hub reseal. I bought the tool put the dust seal and the axle seal in but now I can't get the snap ring in the groove for the axle shaft. If I didn't drive the axle seal deep enough would it prevent the snap ring from lining up? Any suggestions would help. We are stumped and the truck is down. Thank you in advance Eric.
Did you use the seal driver to set the depth in the axle. It may be pushed in too far. Pry the stub axle toward the hub from behind against the u joint.
I did use the seal tool Muckster but I could have screwed it up. If its in too far is there a way to push it out from the back without ruining it? When I pried on the back the shaft seemed to stop spinning freely so I stopped. It was like if I pried it out far enough for it to go it would be binding. It looks like the seal is sitting exactly like the side I haven't taken apart yet. We even measured the depths with a caliper and they matched. I'm stumped.
When you get it all together, it's going to be VERY stiff... at least, it was for me. After I ran it a few miles with the hubs locked, it all felt like it was supposed to. And I have 20-30K on my front end and no problems at all.
I have the washers in as follows, large one with the grooves for vacuum first (with the grooves in) round, hex, round. If it's stiff at first I guess we'll pry it out and get the ring on and call it good. Is there a large plastic washer just outboard of the u joint that's chamferred? Someone mentioned that washer could be the problem if its backwards. I dont know what washer they're talking about. Thank you for answering my questions guys I appreciate it.
That's an awesome diagram and it helped a lot. That's the good news, the bad is that that plastic washer between the axle and the hub was not there. I'll have to go get one I guess. Thanks for the help.
Quick update, the washer is in and the one side is all together. Now I went to the other side and after the seals where all installed and everything was going smooth as silk the cheap ebay hub I have was manufactured with the taps crooked. When the studs are threaded in they won't go into the knuckle. Thank god I have a great buddy that doesn't mind me tying up his pole barn for a few days.
