Thanks Roland...I appreciate it. Did you see more rapid warming up of tranny fluid?
I'm going to Summit Racing in Sparks, NV this week (Thursday? 1/26/12). If anyone wants one, I am sure it can be shipped by me for a lot less than Summit will charge...I would be willing to pick one up for you. PM me if interested.

It did somewhat. To truly be more effective in getting the temps up quicker, I would need to have the thermal bypass mounted before all the coolers, or at least before the stock OTA cooler. I'm happy with it so far. The temps are up about 15*-20* more than without the bypass and I am seeing ~ 140* TFT on days above 50* ambient. I was shooting for ~ 150* minimum. Time will tell if I see any benefits in fuel economy. I've only had it on for about a month now.

I'm going to mount mine just after my external transmission filter which will bypass all cooling until the fluid valve closes...
Interesting comment/direction from Mark K. (one of our Ford FTE Experts).
I have always heard that 220 was not all that healthy so I installed a 31 row (6.0 L) cooler on my 4R100. Even towing my trans temps never hit over 190 now (even in the Davis Mountains of West TX!)
W/O towing, they run a cool 135 to 160. That's all in my Excursion of course so I can't relate to a SD........
Does anyone remember a write-up where someone put a hydraulic fluid thermostat device in the transmission fluid line?
I've hunted all over and can't find the thread
I haven't seen anybody mention synthetic trans fluid. I pull a 40' gooseneck that weighs approx. 12,500 pounds. I switched to https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atd.aspx and immediately dropped 20°-25°. The worst driving conditions I have put it through was in the middle of August during rush hours traffic, stop and go for 15 miles in 98° heat and the hottest it ever got was 195°. Towing on the highway at 70MPH in the dead of summer the trans temps usually sit around 180°. I was considering upgrading the cooler because I heard the OEM cooler on a 2002 model were poor, but the synthetic fluid fixed everything. I haven't seen it hit 200° in 7 years.
Thanks FORDF250HDXLT for the links. I just finished reading them and from Mark Kovalsky's post in the thread, the IDEAL ATF fluid temperature is 170 degrees.
I never see more than 140* unless I'm towing, and then I've never seen more than190* in 100* ambient. In the winter it never gets more than130*, so I guess I need to cover my cooler up.
