Vin # Decode and Pics

We picked up this truck from a neighbor as he didn't really run it that much since he got a new '01 F-350. Did some learning on body work with it then I moved to PA for a job and it pretty much sat around and was used as a work truck at my parents. It has now made its way up here to PA after 10 years and it will stay as a work truck here for another couple years until I have the cash to think about restoring it to a driver. Looking for some information about the truck and how to tell what exactly I have as before I was never interested in it other than it was a cool old truck.
The vin is:

During body work ~ 10 years ago:

Hauling an old metal shed away at my parents:

Splitting and hauling wood, still wasn't on the bump stops:

About two to three years ago when MD had 28+ inches of snow:

Currently as it sits:

I think the running gear under it is from a 250 '66-'79 (44 front 60 rear?) the tags on the axle said 409 front and 410 rear gears, 37" military oz's, the neighbor said it had a 390 in it (2bbl), 4 speed. Like I said I want to find out what the truck has so I know later on when and if something needs replaced so I can locate the part properly. My current plans are in 5+ years to find a good body for the truck, remove the current one and get the frame cleaned up put a new body on top of the drivetrain. This body has been to OBX for 5+ years and obviously has been in the salt belt for 10+ now. It is showing its age very fast. I have been reading off and on on this form (66') for the past couple of months, this place is a gold mine for knowledge. We also have a 03 250 (7.3), that I have learned a lot about since joining this form a few years ago. Thanks to everyone in advance, it's awesome to see how many of these are still around!

Converted to 4WD after it left the assembly line, IMO, well after. If it has a "divorced" transfer case, swapped parts came from 1967/77 F250 4WD "High Boy."

The tailgate is from a 1967/72, FORD insert from a 1967/69, 1970/72 Sport Custom.

Seats have been replaced from lawd only knows what.

On sale day, 352 and 360 engines magically become 390's! Measure the stroke to determine what size it is.

352/360 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78."

Factory installed 4WD V8's: 1965/67 352 2V / 1968/76 = 360 2V / 1977/79 = 351M & 400, 2V's only available.

Has a 3 spoke "Sport" steering wheel, introduced in 1977 Passenger Cars, 1978 F100/350's, Bronco's and Econolines.

Has backup lamps, not offered until 1967. The lenses and bodies are the same: 1967/72 Stylesides, 1967/77 Bronco's, 1969/74 Econolines.

These lamps bolt right on without mods, but what is being used to activate them is?

Step Bumper is genuine Ford, could be from any 1967/79 Styleside.

Outside mirrors and styled wheels are aftermarket.

You can always count on Number Dummy to know where, when, why, and for how long something was made. He always has good information.

I for one like the looks of this conversion. With a little more lispstick and rouges could be a very nice looking rig. No pics of the motor trans and running gear of course but if that is all done well and not cobbled together it should be a slick to enjoy for many years.

I knew NumberDummy would have a field day with this truck. The steering wheel is off a 78 Sport F100 Ranger (it was my fathers truck). The tailgate we bought for just shy of a hamilton three years ago, as the one that was on the truck checked out due to rust. I can't check the motor's true size unless it ever needs to come apart.

I really liked the truck lines and appearance when we were doing body work on it, but function over finesse sometimes has to happen. We were sick of being out in the cold pushing snow on a Gravely tractor. The heater on this truck has one speed high (low speed is broken), and works extremely well!

I will try to get pictures of the axle tags, and the transfer case when I can and post those pictures up also. The transmission is a 4 speed (3+granny).

I need to find some pictures of what this truck looked like original if anyone has any direct side on, and head/rear on shots I would appreciate it. I can then clip them for and use it for photoshopping. Thanks again for all the information and I will post the other pics up soon!

What is the shift pattern on your trans ? Is reverse up by the glove box or by the seat? The T-case is most likely a Dana/Spicer 24. Is the front axle open knuckle or closed knuckle? If the tags are still on the axles they will have a build date on them. I'm pretty darn partial to slick 4x4's and your has a bunch of potential !

The New Process 435 was the only 4 speed manual trans available for 1965/79 F100/250 4WD's, 1979 F350 4WD's. Reverse is down, towards the seat.

Your undercarriage looks a little like my 65 did when I first got it. Coated with alot of good old crude rust preventative. I dont know if it makes a difference but just so you know your front drive shaft is wrong way around slip yoke should be up by the TC.

Good information on the slip yoke, thanks. I will have to correct that when I rebuild the u-joints. I am looking for a good cab and bed that isn't swiss-cheese as my current setup is (thanks rust-belt!) and I will go through and wire wheel the frame, coat with rust converter and prime and paint. I don't ever plan to make this a show truck, but I would like it around for years to come.

Edit: on the seats, I was told they were from a Mazda. They are actually pretty comfortable and I wouldn't mind keeping them but whoever mounted them should be examined. All thread (1/4") through the floor for the front and bolted in the back. If I keep them they will be mounted correctly with home made brackets with 5/8" bolts minimum.

I had to know about the motor so I popped out a plug and measured the stroke with some wire. 3.50", so its a 360 / 352, as normal number dummy was right. It doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it though. The motor does everything I ask it and has low mileage on it, so unless I do a body swap and go through the whole truck it wont get changed. I would probably put a 460 into it unless I could pick up a true 390 that was rebuilt for cheap (hah). Also moving some hay this weekend decided to use it since it was already on that side of the farm. It's a bit harder to throw hay up on this than the 03 superduty with the height difference! Also noticed the 03 bed has more room in front of the rear axle, it changed the way I stacked hay. I do love getting in this truck and driving it and will continue to keep enjoying driving it! I do need to make some new body spacers out of plastic as the ones on the truck are showing their age and have some cracking. So that will be up on this list this year to get those fixed. Might even blow a new coat of paint on the truck so it doesn't continue down to the primer and degrade worse than it already has been!
