Well, I still wasn't liking the way my truck first starts, even after moving the new wally world batts to the frame with new cables. We needed a couple more batteries around again anyway, so I went and bought 2 new 850cca motorcraft batteries. Oriellys had them in stock. It started better with the motorcrafts, but still not sure I'm done. I need to try it out for a little while. Next if it still isn't cranking like I want I'm ordering a mean green starter.
Ya, Mike, its 3 years old I think, and a remanufactured one at that...
It's mainly the first start of the day, or after it sits for a while. Its not from cold, its been real warm here already. Its cranking slower than I think it should. Once warmed up it seems to crank better. Haven't had a good test or two with the new batts yet though either.
I like the mean green alternator I got, I never looked at their starters on their web site. This is what I got but I've only had it a few thousand miles now so its to early to tell yet how good it is. It spins it over really good though: UltraDuty Denso 2.5kW Ford Powerstroke Diesel Starter | eBay
Thanks for the link Glenn. I will go with a mean green, made in the usa, and from what I've read the best starter for these trucks. I thought it was 400 bucks, 340 is better anyway..
The one you have looks pretty good also. Now I'm not sure. Made in the usa too. 90 bucks cheaper too. We'll see I guess, gonna give it a little while like I said to check it out further.
There is a warranty but I can't remember for how long. They have a phone number on that link. I don't know about mean green but the top bolt on the one I got was a bitc!!! to get in. There is a adapter you put between the starter and trans and it makes it really hard to get at. I had to use 1/4" extension with a swivel to get at it. I almost give up and even after sticking with it couldn't get it that tight.
It cranked over better for sure this morning. I'm gonna hold off for now on the starter, but have decided for sure I will get a mean green soon, month or two probably. Too many projects and not enough money...
Ya, it may wait for a while. Your 2 cents are always welcome here Glenn! Ordered the double pulley for the alternator today. Springs still aren't done, etc....
