Thanks Cutts. Good info on the cable protection, didn't know that. Thanks for the links too. This is not my DD either, it only sat for a week last time and wouldn't turn over. Granted it was cold, but new batteries and plugged in for 3 hours there was obviously a problem.
You might try Costco.
I just put 2 new batteries in from Costco with 3 year full replacement and 84 month prorated.
Each battery was $87 I believe. Less than 90 for sure. They are 850CCA.
Goood reviews on them, but since I've only had them a short time, can't review them.
Got all the cable, ends, terminals, remote terminals, on/off switch, etc. ordered. That stuffs not cheap either. Going to call oriellys and ford tomorrow to try and find motorcraft batteries.
With the kind of terminals I have coming I can shrink the height of the box by 1 1/2" which will be nice.
You definably had issues with electrical. Something is drawing from batteries when sitting. Check alternator to see if it warm or cold after sit overnight.
All this talk about batteries got me thinking of a conversation I had this past week with a guy that I work with. He has a friend that works at a battery recycling center. Supposedly he says that 95% of the automotive batteries sold in the US are refurbished batteries. He says they clean or replace any bad plates, replace the terminals, put them in a new case, and recharge them with acid. I guess ultimately it doesn't matter, since the plates and acid are what makes up the workings of the battery, but for these prices, I would be nice if we could get a decent NEW battery. I can't verify any of this, but it is something to think about.
There was nothing drawing from the batteries, we checked. I had a friend over who really knows his stuff in this area (I don't) and there was no draw sitting, but they were both sitting at 11V before we unhooked them. He's bringing something home tomorrow from work to further test the battery, not a load test but something else ( he told me and I forgot already...). I still need to check them tomorrow seperately to see which one is suspect at this time now that they are unhooked for over a day.
Like I said, I'm not an expert in this area at all, but he is, and he's never let me down with advice or help. Tommorow night I'll find out for sure. Going to wait till tuesday for the battery ordering just in case we find something else out.
Nate, I hope you're wrong. I wouldn't be suprised though..
Cosco like a sams club. They sell stuff in bulk so sometimes it ends up cheaper. Cosco, sams club(walmart version), and Bjs are all the same.
If you have a rural king by you they have really good prices on batterys, but some guys around here been saying they dont work well. I got a set of the Gold version from advanced auto parts for around 90 bucks each with a discount. not sure how much they are without the discount but they work well for me.
At first I thought I had bad cables, surely my 3 year old interstates couldn't die? The last set lasted 8 years! Then like Darin, I thought I had a draw on the system, I couldn't find it. Then the truck stranded me and out of anger I bought the XP power battery's. It spins over really fast now so I ruled out bad cables. But, I'm having lots of second thoughts about spending that kind of money!

probably a hydrometer.
it measures the specific gravity of a liquid.
in a lead-acid battery, a hydrometer measures the density of the sulfuric acid solution in the battery's liquid electrolyte.
I know Joseph, you kinda warned me (although after I had them you still did tell me).
That's what I mean Glenn, just don't want to spend that much. Between new cables, ends, multiple hookup terminals, remote terminals, on/off switch, and other crap I just spent 300 bucks last nite just on those parts.
My truck sits weeks at a time. If it's a cold start, the batteries just don't have the umph. I think that's pretty normal for these older diesels (especially with 650 cca old batteries). I just plug in the block heater and hook up a battery charger.
This spring I'm gonna get a set from Sam's Club. I know plenty of people who haven't paid full price for batteries in ages because Sam's Club is nation wide and puts a full 3 year warranty on batteries. I forget how long they prorate after that. It's much longer than the life of batteries to be sure.
In my post above I forgot to say, one interstate had a bad cell. They offered $50 towards a new battery and i asked if i could apply that to any battery. They said yes so I got a battery for the TDI bug.
