Should the IDI whip over like a PSD? Mine cranks really slow for about 20seconds, then speeds up and lights off. It's killing the batteries having to crank it this long, since I usually have to stop and glow it again to get it to start when it's dead cold.
Yes it should spin fast. It sound as if your starter is getting tired. Also take a look at the cables for any swollen or cracked isolation, that would indicate corosion in the cables. You will be surprised at the difference of a new starter.
Ok, mine sounds like Tom's first video, then starts spinning fast before lighting off.
I'll do a voltage drop test a little later to rule out cables, likely it'll need the starter replaced though. Thanks.
mine was spinning worse than toms first vid when i first got it.my cables was obviously the problem though cus i saw black at the pass side battery.i cut that open and sure enough the green/white corrosion powder spilled out for like 6" both directions.swapped those and sounds like its running when cranking minus the rattle.
I dunno why my video ain't working, but it pretty much sounds like in Toms 2nd vid.
Your video worked for me, although I got the error message: "Embedding disabled by request" or something like that. I simply clicked through to go to YouTube and view it.
you really don't realize how bad the starter is until you replace it!
i swore that starter was good, until it simply would not start the truck. finally i put the spare off the shelf in and WOW!
and all my cables are less than 1 year old on that truck too.
i had the original starter rebuilt, and was going to put it on until i saw the positive cable saw split and swollen. changed the cables and it was like a new starter agin, then slowly started getting harder to start until it would not spin fast enough to start under 50 degrees.
