So I tore apart my dash yesterday to work on my dash lights. I replaced all of the bulbs, but have found out that two of the holes are stripped. The plastic that holds the bulb in has crumbled away, is there anyway to get the bulb to stay in? I think I need to just get a new cluster. I have heard that I can get a better made cluster from a 80's Ford van.
When I replaced the bulbs they are not as bright. The guy at the parts store told me the lower the number the brighter. What have you guys used?
Also, I found this guy in the dash. It turns on whenever I turn the lights on. Where does it go? It wasn't hooked up to anything.
One last question. My lever to change the heat to defrost broke. I found that the lever fell off the the bracket that it rotates on. It looks like there is supposed to be one of those caps that you press on over it to hold it on. What have you guys done to fix this?
Get yourself a new cluster because if it crumbles it's definitely bad and all your going to have is problems. LED lights will be brighter yet. Make sure your printed circuit isn't corroded too.
Yeah, I'm going to look into a new one when it warms up a little. Sad thing is, is that the cluster is in good shape other then those two holes have stripped out.

The composition cluster back that holds the bulb in has crumbled away.
I think I need to just get a new cluster. I have heard that I can get a better made cluster from a 80's Ford van. I wonder where you heard that? Dunno for sure, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was here on FTE, because...
This is a typical problemo. I've typed at least 100 posts over the past 5 years describing this issue and the fix. Here's the info...again.
1975/79 F100/350 / 1975/80 Econoline / 1978/79 Bronco: The composition cluster backs installed in these vehicles can TURN TO DUST before your very eyes!
In 1981, Ford came out with hard plastic cluster backs for Econolines. These were also used as the Service Part Replacements for the crap cluster backs used in the above vehicles.
E1PZ-10848-A .. Hard Plastic Cluster Back-Use with Oil & Amp Gauges / Found in: 1981/91 Econolines. (NOTE: Printed circuit board is the same 1976/91).

Want brand new genuine Ford NOS originals?
CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC (800-476-9653) has: (599) E1PZ-10848-A & (114) E1PZ-10848-B cuz Carpenter bought up all that FoMoCo had remaining.
Now, y'all won't have to scrounge boneyards searching for the little charmers.
And btw: Some of the crap cluster backs were replaced under warranty, some were replaced 'customer pay' .. but many were never replaced...and are crumbling away.
Thanks for the help. I have actually read that post before while I searched. I'll give that place a call for a new cluster. E1PZ-10848-A is the one I want, right?

E1PZ-10848-A .. Hard Plastic Cluster BACK (this is not the entire cluster) = Use with Oil & Amp GAUGES, not with Oil & Amp Warning lights.
