i recently replaced starter/bat cables/grd cable from engine to frame, but still, on occassion when restarting (within 2 minutes) starter turns over slow and then catches (battery/alt/hydrometer test all good)
1986 f250 460 engine what is wrong/only thing left is solenoid on rt fender?
Could also be that the DSII ignition module (aluminum box on the drivers side inner fender) is not retarding the ignition timing while cranking.
This is a feature of the factory (Motorcraft) boxes and NAPA Echlin for sure, but I have heard that some of the cheaper aftermarket modules don't have it.

I guess we should ask what the base timing is sitting at right now? Maybe he's got just a little too much initial advance...
settings are factory 8degrees , i have it at 12 currently
Back up to 10 and see what happens. I'll bet your issue clears up.
Also, like previously mentioned by ArdWrknTrk, check your module for brand name. If it's not Motorcraft or the NAPA Echlin line, you might not be getting the benefit of retarded timing while cranking.
Do the timing adjustment first. It's free, and will help you pin down this problem to a timing issue. Then check your module. If it's a cheap Chinese or off-brand unit, you might be able to re-advance your base timing for it's performance/MPG benefit by getting a quality module.
thanks, i will set back to 10 degrrees, very interesting what you explained about module/control box retarding during start up / i never would have guessed that and of course it does sound like a timing problem now
This page has a nice color coded schematic showing the how the retard function is set up. http://webpages.charter.net/1bad6t/duraspark.html
Farther down the page are two links for schematics of different MSD setups with the DSII.
Too bad you already replaced the starter. The later 460s came with a permanent magnet gear reduction starter, it will crank a very hot 460 with no problem.
thx on the schematic and future reference upgrade starters, i retired as nissan / datsun mechanic 12 yrs ago and enjoy this great Ford i bought 10yrs ago and up grading as i go for offroad trails and 22 ft trailer
lowering timing to 12 degrees seems to have taken up the slack and no more intermittant slow turn over during restart after turning off hot (matter of seconds)
Appreciate.
