hey there so i just got a new to me carb b/c my old one literally died. what i got was a 650 carter. what happens though is if i am accelerating mildly abot 50% at some point it seems to lean out and if i push a little harder i get a pop or if i jsut lay off a little bit then lay into it kickdown drops and off to the races i go. anyone else had these kinda issues with a carter?
I'd start by making sure that your accellerator pump squirts all the way through the throttle stroke. Does the accellerator pump arm have one hole or three?
Your '78 likely has a 351M or 400 and stock fuel pressure is about 7 psi on them .... if that's what you have.
The Carter 4 bbl carb is pretty much the same as an Edelbrock 4 bbl carb as the Edelbrock is a modernized copy. They both need a fuel presure regulator to limit fuel pressure to under 6 psi, 5.5 is what Edelbrock recommends.
The Holley 12-803 works great for this. Do not wasted $$$ on Spectra or "Mr G" FPR. They do not have sufficient flow nor do the accurately control pressure.
I've been having a problem with these carbs myself lately. Since I rebuild them for other people, it can be a real problem when they don't work right. Go get a rebuild kit for it. Take it apart and use about 3 cans of carb cleaner to get everything spotless. Use the little straw that comes on the side of the carb cleaner to blow out all the passages. Take special car with main jets, squirters, and accelerator pump well. Now, because of the accelerator pump design on these things, the float adjustment is CRITICAL. 7/16" closed and I think an inch and something open. (The kit will have the numbers on the instruction paper)
If you do all this, it should be fine. Carters and Edelbrocks aren't near as forgiving when a problem arises. I recently tried to put a 625 CFM Carter on a worked SBC and couldn't get it to run right for the life of me. I literally pulled pieces of Holley off the shelf and built a carburetor out of spare parts and it ran like a new one. The Carter was sold to me as a complete "working" carburetor. I'm not saying it's a bad carburetor, it just has to be PERFECT when it goes together or it won't run right.
yeah its truck is a 400, i got the carb from a guy real cheap cuz he jsut idnt need it. it was a on his car and he said it ran fine and of course i believe him. i will try all the suggestions and see what happens,
