This is the first winter with my '96 (4x4, SC) because it's been in pieces. I had to put a new front end (literally) under it from my '94 Explorer Sport. The gear ratios are of course the same and everything works very well no problems.
My question: When turning sharply (not lock to lock) the front end binds as would be expected on dry pavement; but as in this morning it was in snow and does it in gravel also. I'm very sure that the front end isn't limited slip as the axle codes are the same on the '94 as the '96 (code 91). Doesn't do it of course when in 2wd. My 3 BIIs didn't do this. Not new to RBVs, just new to this truck.
Binding as in hopping around a corner or binding as in the steering wheel not coming back to center after the turn? If it is the first one then it is either in 4x4 or you have a bad locking hub. If it is the latter of the2 then a u-joint or bad front-end parts. Jack the front of the truck up and cycle the wheels lock to lock at each wheel. Check ball joints and tierod ends.
Binding as in 4x4 in tight turns.. All front end components are new. I would expect it on dry pavement, but not on gravel or snow. My BIIs don't do it. It doesn't do it when in 2wd. It's like it has lockers on the front axles.
Yes. 4x4 = hubs locked in and xfr case engaged.. Hubs are locked in.. otherwise it would be 2wd. How else do you want me to say it?
2wd = hubs not locked in or xfr case engaged.
NO problems in turning radius in 2wd. ONLY in 4x4 in tight turning situations. Snow, sand, gravel, loose dirt etc. I EXPECT it to do this on dry pavement in 4x4.
Check the front knuckles for what? They are in new shape, they are lubed, they are not bound up..
You know I am trying to help you here and if you don't want it by me asking you a series of questions then I will stop and you can get your answer a different way.
Not the "knuckles" the knuckle joints (u-joints) at the front wheels. If yui are in 4 wheel drive and you are turbing on any type of terrain maybe not ice the front end will feel like it is binding.
Thanks for the replies. If it sounds normal, that's all I wanted to be assured of. I have 4 Explorers and 3 BIIs that I have not experienced this on, but this is the first 4x4 Ranger. I just wanted to know that it was fairly normal. Maybe it's because of the 3.27 gearing.
02FX45.4 - yes, I know you were trying to answer. Thank you. And I know the knuckles are the steering knuckles (u-joints). Try not to be condescending with your help. Some of us have been around for a while.
