99 F-250 Superduty...
I need to replace the 4x4 hubs on the front as they are not working, i think they are the original parts. Is it really as easy as taking the snap ring out, popping them out and putting the new one on?
It almost seems to easy to be true, a shop wanted about $800 to do this, I can get the parts for less than $300!!
I got the truck this summer and the 4x4 will not lock in. I had a vacuum issue and that has been resolved.
The problem is that the 4x4 will not lock in. I turn the hubs to "lock" get back in and flip the switch. I hear a click under the hood and it seems like it wants to lock in but just won't.
The guy at the shop said that I "have bad hubs" So I looked it up and it really doesnt seem that hard. I have some mechanical skills!!! I would guess that the 4x4 has been used in at least a year until I tried it earlier this week.
Lock the hubs, switch to 4x4hi, then turn the wheel all the way to one side and move forward. You should feel a lot of binding as you move. This is how to tell if the hubs are locked. Is the 4x4 light coming on? With the hubs in the locked position, can you turn the driveshaft by hand?
I'm telling you this because I don't know how/why you think they are not working.
Can you tell us what you have done to come to this conclusion?
I would use the link I gave you to take the hubs apart to see if you can see something that is broke. I would R&R both hubs before I would go out and buy new hubs.
This is the hub solenoid that can go out and not send the vacuum pulse to the front hubs. Its on the passenger side firewall close to the battery post in this pic. The thingy with the yellow plastic top.
If he's turning the hub dial manually (clockwise to lock), and they are not locking, then the hub is physically broken and is not repairable. That is not a vacuum problem or a problem with the vacuum mechanism in the hub.
Last night I installed 2 new warn manual hubs. I plugged the vacuum line down by the tires. 1 Hub looked to be "shot" the other seemd to be ok. I replaced both anyway.
I locked them both, got in the turck and flipped the switch..... It locked right in and seems to be working great!!
