Engine Rebuild Time

New to FTE, just a question for those of you who have had engines rebuilt. I have a 75 F250 that is currently being switched from a 360 to a 390. The guy i have doing it has had my truck since October. He said people who put cash down will get priority. I'm 17 so forking over 15 wasn't easy but I did it hoping it would be done fast. It is now January and he said it would be done last week but he still hasn't called. I have a pretty good idea of what he is pulling i think. Just wondering how long it has taken people to build your engines.
Thanks

Depends on the machine shop's workload (in fact, the same applies for body/paint shops). I assume the shop is doing the assembly. Call him up and find out at what stage the build is in and let him know when you expect your engine to be completed. Stress that you're under pressure to get your rig going and HE needs to help you. Be sincere but don't be an a-hole about it.

Also, take your dad, uncle, or somebody of age so you have a witness as to what is discussed and stated (or not stated). Before leaving, let the shop know when you'll be back in one week to take a look at the progress. That way they at least have a deadline to show work was actually done. Call before visiting on that day. Do not flake on that return date.

I hope your machinist warranties his work. A good shop will do that especially if they machine and assemble the long block.

A big thing for quality machine shops is their reputation. If they have a good one there could have been some issues so call them up find out what is going on. The squeaky wheel gets the grease but one that squeaks too much might be thrown out.

They key is be nice polite and firm. Since you are only 17 take along someone older than you preferably another guy. Not being sexist but most men will respond better to an authoritative man than they will women or people they consider kids just a fact of life.

I had my 390 rebuilt last year. It took about 4 months. Many factors such as machining and ordering parts can lead to delays. I agree with other nmembers responses. Take someone with you to check on progress.

The guy doing it went to highschool with my dad and has done all the work on our trucks and tractors for as long as I can remember. He does really good work and won't charge you for something you don't need, but he has always been pretty slow. He had a block, a ground crank, pistons etc., and an aluminum intake for it already. He is the kind of guy that you call and he lets it ring and it doesn't have an answering machine, so my dad and I stopped by his house last week, my truck was still there, nothing had changed and he said the engine is in his other shop (he has 2). He also said he basically has it in a longblock so he just has to finish putting the rest together and swap out the engines. He also said since it is taking so long he wouldn't charge me any more than 15 and he would have it done by last week... Guess I just have to take a snow day and go do some investigating. As far as me leaving my truck there, I have pics of what it looked like before, I have the title, and my uncle is a pretty big attorney around here so i'm not worried about him trying anything.

I plan to try, with all the snow we have we should have a snow day today or tomorrow. That's another reason I want it back, the dually doesn't agree with any snow at all.
