With as much as they hold and the amount of miles between fillups I have never even thought about carrying around some extra. I really dont seen anywhere inside the cab where some could be stashed. Maybe wrap a jug in an old towel/blanket and keep it in the bed?
I can't see the point in carrying extra DEF, unless you are on one long *** towing trip and are planning on cutting it that tight between fills. If that were the case I could probably find some where to keep it in the trailer.
I have nearly 15,000 miles on my truck now and I have used 3x 2.5 gallon cans (7.5 gallons if I did my arithmetic correctly). That would be 2.5 gallons every 5,000 miles.
I fill my tank up when I see the 1/2 tank level (have to go back through the information screen, I check it a couple times a week out of habit).
When I went on my long trip this past summer I did carry a 2.5 gallon jug with me. I had never filled up the tank, had a few thousand miles on the truck and had not filled it up yet so I figured I'd take a can just in case. At some point in the trip my DEF info tab showed 1/2 tank so I went ahead and put the can in, not needed but I topped it off anyway. That's what I continue to do. $12 or so for a can isn't much spread over 5000 miles. That's 8 tenths of a percent DEF usage compared to fuel at 17mpg, or (at 3.80/gal diesel) roughly a penny on the dollar for DEF cost compared to fuel.
No complaints here. I can spare an extra cent per gallon of fuel The other way around would be no DEF and less fuel mileage, I think the SCR systems using DEF pays for the DEF and then some.
No need to around the home area. On my 3500 mile trip last fall hunting took and extra 2 1/2 gal jug in the basement of the 5th. wheel. Towing I seem to get a little under a 1000 miles a gallon.
Thanks....good info and it was good to hear some real world experiance with how long the stuff lasts. I did read a couple of posts elsewhere some feeling they needed to carry spare but remebering a wally world is always close by anywhere and not letting it go past 1/2 empty sounds like a plan.
The harder you the truck the more DEF you will consume. Long trips running light I would niot bother to bring any. Towing my fiver across several states I would take extra.
