I am looking to upgrade to a diesel and have been looking at the 7.3L because I know it is a good engine but have found that most of these trucks are 150,000+ miles so I have been looking at the 6.0L and know that if the heads are done and the EGR delete is done they are also a good engine. Is there a way to tell by looking at the truck to see if the heads have been done with the ARP Stud kit? What should I do?

You don't have to delete the EGR cooler to have a long happy life with the 6.0L; anyone that's trying to convince you of that is full of bologna. With that said, even a stock 6.0L can be a good truck if you do your homework. Get an Oasis (only available through a Ford dealership) and Carfax of the truck your interested in; both will tell you the history of the truck. Look to see if there is a white residue around the degas cab. Also look in the bottle to see if it's actually coolant or something else. The only way you can tell from the outside of the block if it's been studded is to look at the bottom row of bolt/studs out side the rocker boxes. If they look like regular bolts, then mostly like they are TTY that are OEM. If they're studs...it's been studded at some point.
I would also add : get a scangaugeII when test driving the vehicle you are interested in. Pay particular attention to the oil and coolant temps. Also look at FICM volts. Lots of threads on how to set up the scangauge.
I will also add, if it has any signs of a tuner ever being on it or an a/m intake, steer clear. Good signs it was owned by Mr. Heavy Foot. Of course these are opinions and someone will probably take it the wrong way because they have a chipped truck for sale.
I took a pic one time and posted it of a studded motor..I'll try and find it....I can't find it on this computer and my truck has 14" of snow on it right now so I'll have to get one a little later.

That would be great! I went looking for a photo of a studded engine, but keep coming up empty handed trying to show what it would look like from the outside.
Or you could just stay away and not take the chance. There are a lot of good reasons to not buy a 6.0 truck. My advice would be to just stay away- unless of course you want to buy mine and then I'll tell you what a great truck the Ford 6.0 is... -Mike
Thanks for all the replys and advice I did end up picking up a desiel this weekend. I found and 01 that an older retiry owned here in AZ with the 7.3L in it and another plus was it only had 75,000 on the truck.

Sounds like you've got a young one there, hate to hear your not joining the 6.0L; but that 7.3L should treat you well. Good luck with the truck
You pretty mch cant go wrong with the 7.3 Put 140K on my 02 before I up graded to the 07. If you can find one get the grey crank position sensor from an Int dealer put in the glove box and you will be good to go.
Other than a water pump about 110K and the sensor mine was bullet proof and was a strong runner. Did have a tuner but never used mor than the tow setting. I was a bit of a freak about oil changes, Bought a mighty vac & sucked out the HPOP res and flushed & refilled every oil change after I learned that over on the 7.3 page. Hang out a read on the 7.3 page there a great bunch of guys just like the 6.0 page and you will learn a lot!
Have fun with your new to you truck!!
