Okay so I'm trying to troubleshoot a cold start problem on my dads 07 F-250 6.0 which has 180,000 miles on it. It is taking a good 8 or 9 seconds to crank, then running rough and smoking a lot! I'm afraid when it gets cold enough it's not going to crank at all. It had a few glow plugs out, as well as the GPCM, so I replaced all of those thinking that was the problem...but I was wrong. All the glow plugs are working, but the symptoms are still the same. With no CEL, I think it almost has to be the injectors sticking. I have switched it to 5W40 T6 synthetic and ran additives through it to no avail. My question is is there a way to test the injector to see which ones are bad/faulty without having to replace them all? Any advice would be appreciated!

Check FICM voltage (cold engine):
KOEO
cranking
at 2000 rpm
Use an OBDII scanner that reads the voltage or CAREFULLY check the voltage at the proper terminals under the FICM cover plate (instructions in the Tech Folder).
Make sure batteries are charged and individually load tested.
Thanks for the info! Batteries are charged and fairly new, shouldnt be a problem there. Can the FICM cause cold start problems? I guess that makes sense though, just hadn't thought of that since it only does it when cold...
Like Bismic said, check FICM voltage, I had the exact same symptoms when mine went bad. Send it to FICM Repair.com - Your Source for FICM Repair if bad. WAY cheaper than buying a new one and they replace failed components with upgraded one's so its better than new.
I'll be sure and check it! I thought that the white smoke would point towards injectors as opposed to the FICM. Guess you learn something new every day. Could it still be the FICM even if the truck runs perfect when its warm?

Do NOT take your batteries for granted. From experience, I've found that battery age has nothing to do with battery life. New batteries can go bad too.
That's a recall for the FICM harness and EBP connector, not the FICM itself.
Yep, that's what I thought....My truck is going in the shop soon before the extended Ford diesel motor warranty expires. It doesn't get crazy cold here, but when it gets below freezing, my motor sounds like it's going to explode when I first start it up. Got 160,000 miles on it so far, and the warranty expires at 200,000. Hoping it's a fuel injection problem and not the FICM.
You might want to check the FICM voltages yourself before taking it in. If you see the voltages low in that case, you are in a way better position to have them give you a replacement *under warranty*.
