HEATER CORE OVERHEAT?
Heater core was bipassed due to leak. This has dealer a/c and getting the heater box out is more of a b!#$% than even the others apparently. Looks like I have to pull the dash to get all the air ducts and crap out of the way.
Anyway, I hooked the heater core back up since the temp was dropping fast. I figured I could live with the slight sweet smell of antifreeze for a couple. I drove to the airport today (10 miles) in freezing weather and the truck is running hot. Not overheating but getting there about 3/4 of the way. Checked the antifreeze level - okay. Checked the oil - a little low but okay - topped it off. Still running hot in 20 degree weather.
Can a heater core leak cause a truck to overheat? I know it is a closed system but i still don't understand how the heater core could cause it to overheat. I changed absolutely nothing else except for the heater core bypass and replenishing the antifreeze. The thermostat does have the small air hole to release air that could be trapped. It doesn't make sense to me but maybe I am missing some education.
Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance.
Or you introduced an air pocket when hooking up the core... but a couple cycles of heat cold and/or your burp hole should take care of any air pretty quickly so I'm betting its something else.
If the engine was indeed overheating it would have been puking coolant everywhere and the engine would have been running horribly.
Also the engine could care less if the heater core is hooked up, not hooked up or even leaking a little.
