Brake Question
I called a shop that is popular out here in the West that uses this system to get a quote and here is what they told me. They would use the Pro Cut on the front rotors but couldn't use it on the rears so they would turn them on a bench lathe. They would replace all 4 calipers with remanufactured ones and then replace pads with OEM specified Raybestos pads. Then they would bleed and replace fluid. This would come with a 3 year/25,000 mile warranty for $679.00.
They would not just turn the rotors and replace pads without the caliper replacement. He then explained about contaminants in the fluid collecting in the calipers and rubber deteriorating for the reason that they always replace the calipers.
Does this seem reasonable, and is replacing the calipers always necessary for an Excursion with 115k? He also said that there are some other options for pads for "heavy duty" applications but he didn't seem to be very willing to discuss them at this point. Thanks
If you know the calipers are giving you problems (doubtful they ALL are, if any) then the guy is just blowing smoke up your wazoo, trying to upsell you and get more money.
Calipers, brake fluid change, and pads can all be done by you. All he needs to do is cut your rotors.

I just had the Pro cut method done at our local Ford dealer on my front rotors, didn't do the back as I had just replaced them a couple days earlier. They didn't say anything about the calipers needing to be replaced with this process but did want to put new Super Duty pads on. I am not sure why the shop you talked to doesn't want to do the rears as my Ford dealer does both front and rear with the Pro Cut. I really like the job they did with the Pro Cut, took thier time and it came out really nice. I can't belive how many shops tried to talk me out of Pro Cut saying that it's better to replace the rotors and that Pro Cut rotors will fail in a very short time

I agree with you alot has to do with the driver. The major reason most shops wanna just replace rotors is there is a high mark up on the parts. There is very little profit on the labor only side. Also most smaller shop cant afford the high price of the on car brake lathe tool.
Do you have a Ford dealer around that will not try to rip your shorts out of your pants. Guess I'm lucky here with our dealer they don't seem to try to get you all the time.
