Hey guys... Put my truck in 4x4 this morning locked the hubs put in neutral and threw it in. It engaged I believe because I could make it out of the driveway but I have a terrible grinding thudding noise come from I think just the drivers side hub when I'm straight or turning... I'm thinking wheel bearing or hub assembly but any suggestions are much appreciated thanks guys
Is there noise when in two wheel drive? Sounds like needle bearings or worn u joint, needle bearings will make that noise even in two wheel drive, u joints can make a binding noise when turned sharped to one side or the other on dry pavement when locked in. Leave it locked in and put a big screw driver in the u joint and pry on it up,down and see if it has play in it.
Mine is doing the same thing. I'm getting ready to replace the hub bearing and seals. Will probably replace the axle shaft u joint too. Mine sounds awful in 4wd, you can't really hear it in 2wd but if I turn the truck off and let it roll in neutral in 2wd it can be heard a little. A buddy told me that if the outer seal is bad it will cause it to make noise like that. I know my outer seal is bad cause its leaking gear oil out.
thanks for everyones input - i ended up bringing it to a shop...replaced the hubs with warn premium locking hubs...turns out my u-joints were shot! replaced them as well and problem solved
