Front end Grinding noise

Last week my 04 F250 started making a terrible grinding and clunking noise. I could feel vibration while driving. The sounds seemed to come from the rear and front at the the same time. I had both ujoints replaced on the rear drive shaft, when doing so the shop said the front right axle joint looks to be gone as well. I will be getting this replaced in a couple days.
My concern is that I am still getting a grinding/ crunching noise in the front right wheel. This is the wheel with the bad axle joint, but I thought this didn't spin in 2wd? Could there be another cause to the sound? I just installed 2 new warn manual hubs a few months ago. I am taking the truck on a long trip in a few days and am very concerned, anyone have any ideas?

sounds more to me like maybe your hub bearings are gone. You still need the u-joint on the front axle so that you keep the wheel in the correct position.

Put the wheel up on a jack and see if the wheel has movement from side to side by hand and if so then I would suspect the bearings are gone.

How many miles on the truck?

Thanks Senix, there is 80000k on it. Things just got worse though. I just went out and the grinding noise is constant, and now the wheel is actually binding up. Is the bearing totally seized? I was going to drive it down to the shop, but now am afraid of doing more damage, should I get it towed?

I would get it towed at this point. Hopefully you can save the axle stubs if you don't drive it anymore. You can get the entire hub assbly with bearing and just slap them on. Might be the best course of action at this point as you probably have been sending metal all throughout the hubs.

Be prepared for around 300-400 a hub.

Good link senix. This is why everyone should grease their hubs through the ABS hole every 50K miles. Or if you don't have ABS, drill a hole in the hub and put a fitting in it. My hubs each took a whole mini-tube of grease at 135k miles and now they will live on. Filled them all the way up and nothing came out later. It even pushed a little water out when I did it.
