Where are some other places that I could mount the spare tire other then under the gas tank? I'd like to keep it with me just in case I actually do need it sometime.
I once had a '68 Ford PU, and I made a mount to carry the spare in the front left side of the bed. It worked good. My favorite is on my '77 F-250. It is a heavy duty mount that carries the spare in front of the grill. I refer to it as my cowcatcher, and it has served as such a time or two. If I had a nice wheel to match the set on my '75 F-250 (my present toy), I'd transfer the cowcatcher to the '75.
If you use the bed alot and need the room looks like under the tank or out front of the grill. Most other options are the fwd L or R corner of the bed mounted standing up or back L or R corners?
Could fab a rear bumper like a jeep had that you can hang a spare tire off it and it swings outa the way to open the tailgate?
Mount to the tail gate? Get a ol 79 Bronco swing away tire mount and mod it to you truck bed, now we are talking different.
Could fab a pre runner bed top mount cab over rack? Or a slip in the rear reciever type spare tire bracket?
The red and black pic is a bronco (not mine) and its factory spare tire mount? I guess you could get one from a JY and fab it to a reg truck, and once again it would be different.
Anyone ever tried a cable drop down for a spare tire? I've seen newer cars with it, and its really handy. Couldn't run the cable straight down from the bed because of the tank..
For visibility's sake, the "best" place is in the front left side of the bed, directly behind the driver.
There is an article in this month's issue of 4WOR using a flat steel bar, a pipe flange, and hardware that pretty much replicates the optional factory setup... Cost only like $15.
Another option is a late-model Bronco interior mounting bracket. It's mounted on the right rear but I think it can be swapped to the left front of a pickup bed.
