spare tire options...

Anyone thought of different places to mount a spare tire besides under the bed?
I would like to put it someplace where it won't be in the way, but don't want to mount it in the front like some i've seen...

Anyone thought of putting a spare tire mount from a full size bronco on the back of the bed??? Think it would work?

That's an awful lot of weight, you'd have to add some addition support to keep the bed side standing upright.

You could do like they do in Africa on the Land Rovers and slap it on the hood.

Or you could make a swing away mount that goes on the bumper.

ooh, i'm liking the bumper mount... don't really want a tire on my hood, lol

thought about putting a roof rack on and mounting it up there. Had a '75 F150 flatbed with a built in rack overhead that i kept the tire up top on

Spare tire is about the only thing keeping me from doing the bronco tank on this truck like I did my 95. I can't stand it in the bed. Its always in the way. I have thought of a safari rack up top but I don't know about that.

How do those attach to the roof?

So I just got done looking at pictures of various roof racks. I think I might have found a new project!! Little nervous about stressing the roof though.......Thoughts?

The one's I have seen on the roof racks either attach to the drip edge, or they screw into the top in the rails that keep the roof stiff.

I don't like them personally. Most vehicles are not made for them. Your better off putting in a sun roof. And with your crew cab TJ, I woudlnt' do it unless I knew how strong the roof support was in general.

My theory on the tire deal is to just get a crappy tire and a POS rusty rim. Just enough to get you 1000 or so miles. People are less likely to steal a tire with 1/4 inch of tread and a crappy rusty steel rim. =)

I just don't want the tire under the truck, or in the bed... and i don't like the front mount spare tires either. Think I might look into a swing-away on the rear bumper

Here's a couple more pics of the bumper mount:

The only thing I don't like about that one is the location. I'd rather have it hinge on the drivers side so it doesn't create that blind spot on the right rear when you're looking in the rear view mirror.

I already have a rusty old wheel with plain ole tire on it. I just don't want it in the bed anymore. I can put it back under the truck for now but if I put the bronco tank in its gets displaced again.

Is that Cary's setup? I have seen it before either way but of me I just can't convince myself I like it.

Hang it on the bed rail right between the stacks. Use a tire cover with a logo or something you like others to know about......Like THIS

or something shiney or a big chunk of diamond plate
Kinda like the link I posted though

Hmm, between the stacks might work... as long as it doesn't stick up in the window too much
