Cam break in

I got my 390 back from the shop thursday, dropped it in and fired it up last night. 5 minutes into break-in the alternator belt snapped, I shut it down quick before it had a chance to overheat. As it turns out the spacer behind the alternator was missing. The alternator moved back, overheating the belt and snapping it. So i put one together a spacer real quick out of some stuff laying around, and fired it back up with another belt I had behind the seat. I ran it for the full 30 minutes at 2500 RPM, no other issues. I fired it up today and ran it for about a half hour, varying the rpm, per my machinist instructions, it seems to run ok.

How long will it be before I know if I killed my cam?

Thanks guys, that helps put my mind at ease! And when it happened it got shut off quick, and the second it started again it was right back to 2500 RPM.

It is scary stuff! This is my first re-build, and I will be happy once this thing is all done.

Your break in is fine. Part of procedure during break in is to check for leaks etc. and shut down if theres a problem and then fire it back up.

You guys were right, I drove it for the first time today and it ran just fine! Sure feels good to have my truck on the road again.
