How to install Neutral Sensor Switch pin?

Hi guys,
I was doing some work on the steering column in my 1971 F250 this weekend when I noticed that the neutral sensor switch pin fell off. At the time I did not know what the heck it was until I tried to turn on the truck.

Anyways, I cant figure out how this pin is supposed to be installed back on the colum. Does anyone have any pictures or diagram that may show how this is installed? Needless to say I am unable to see anything on the column where this pin is supposed to be installed therefore any pictures would be helpful.

If I remember right the pin is on the switch and is held on the column with two screws, more than likely you need a new switch.

Switch pin

The Neutral Safety Switch Activator Switch Pin is ona a small clip that just attaches to the inside of the steering housing. If just a pin fill out, It needs to be replaced. I ordered mine online from MAC'S Part #DOTZ-7B097-B, fOR $13.95. It's a must have, without Truck starts in any gear, and No backup lights.

Installing this puppy is as EZ as pie. Looks sorta like this: }---

This spring steel NSS selector lever (DOTZ-7B097-B) snaps onto the shift tube thru a hole in the mast jacket (steering column outer shroud).

Its knife blade tip fits into the NSS. But, be aware that this lever is notorious for losing tensile strength, causing it to fall off the shift tube and/or its knife blade tip snaps off.

DOTZ-7B097-B (replaced DOTZ-7B097-A & C5TZ-7B097-A) .. NSS Selector Lever / Obsolete

Applications: 1965/77 F100/350 / No Ford Dealer/obsolete parts vendor has any here on the West Coast.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 24 = 800-543-4959.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 1,108 (!!) = 800-476-9653.

Check local repro parts sellers (Blue Oval Truck Parts-Anaheim, The Truck and Car Shop-Orange, Johns F Funhundreds-Corona) before buying the puppy in Lockport NY (Mac's).

Note: The 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com for 22 bucks. I have this CD, if you wanna borrow it, download it into your 'puter, swing on by.

So far, 7 members of the 1961/66 forum have done this, I haven't charged any of these peeps...yet...for the privilege.

As for the catalog, I have it too but I did find the figure the first time I searched for it. Do you know the page or figure?

It's real easy to install??? you must be one of those double-jointed guys Bill...it's a major PITA even if you drop the column from the keeper under the dash. Major contortions, cussing, etc. Guess it's no big deal if your BIL is a chiropractor and gives you free treatments...good luck Gf2501.

I never had any problemo installing the little charmer. 'Course the last time I did, was 30 years ago, when I was 100 lbs. lighter and before 'Arthur' had arrived.

Have two BIL, nether one is a bone crusher. One is an electrical engineer, works for the USAF/NASA. The other was the CCA & V/P of Checker Auto Parts. When they sold out to O'Reilly's, he retired.

Arthur lives in both of my rebuilt shoulders, throw in bifocals and you see why I paid a younger mech $40 to replace the little charmer on my truck...worth every penny after an hour wasted tryin' to do it myself.

Trying to install the NSS pin 7B097, however the old one is proving to be difficult to get out with the restricted space and the multiple times I've managed to bang my head on various parts of the car.

Any suggestions of how to remove the old pin without further dis assembly of the vehicle?

Take a small regular screwdriver and push it under one side of the actuator pin, then lift it up. The actuator is a tensile spring. It will pop right out. Just don't lose it in the column, or you'll be very, very sorry.

I have another thread going with the title “Steering column/shift collar”.
I am joining this new thread (“How to install Neutral Sensor Switch Pin?”) to get information about a certain part.

(TIME OUT - So that I will stay unconfused myself, and to not confuse readers, allow me to clarify which part I am referring to. We will call them Part A and Part B.
Part A –This is the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS), mounted on the lower part of the steering column under the dash. This is a spring loaded switch which turns on and off the backup light, and allows the starter motor to operate only when the gear selector is in Park and Neutral. This part attaches atop the steering column underneath the dash.
Part B – This is the part that Bill / Retired Ford Parts Manager / Part number research refers to as the “spring steel NSS selector lever (DOTZ-7B097-B) (which) snaps onto the shift tube thru a hole in the mast jacket (steering column outer shroud)”.This is the part that moves the NSS when the gear shift selector is moved. END OF TIME OUT)

Okay, now, back to my question. In the process of the repair described in “Steering column/shift collar”, I pulled out the shift tube (the tube inside the steering column)and broke off the part described above as Part B. In this thread, it is referred to as the Neutral Sensor Switch Pin, the part that sticks out and moves the spring loaded prong on the NSS. Not sure if it broke as a result of removing the shift tube, or because I bumped it while moving things around.

Question –I plan to remove the old broken Part B while the shift tube is out of the column . Can I then install the new Part B and then slip the tube back in the column? Or do I need to do this while the shift tube is inserted in the column?

7B097 has to be installed afterwards. You broke it off when removing the sift tube because it sticks out of the column so far.
