[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Oct-02 AT 10:57 AM (EST)]The person, or persons, responsible for these despicable murders and and shootings in Maryland will no doubt renew calls for the ban of high powered rifles. The anti-gun lobby will renew their call for a total ban on all firearms. I saw some idiot Hollywood director on the Today Show saying Canada had 188 murders by firearms last year, and Britain 68. You see where this is going already. How does the rational person sort out the calls for a total evisceration of the 2nd Amendment when we see idiots shooting children. I, for one, will never surrender my firearms. My take on this is to capture this maniac and eliminate him after due process. Then perhaps, we should explore the possibility of tracing bullets back to the point of sale. I don't know how, but we need to do something more to protect innocent lives. Any ideas to solve this problem? We need to protect lawful firearms owners, and yet be able to catch criminals faster before they can continue harming innocent lives. We also must prepare for the onslaught of calls for disarming the American firearms owner.

The last shooting, the 13 year old, happened just 15 miles up the road from me.

Our outgoing Gov. Glendening has imposed so many knee-jerk gun laws in his past 8 years, it's pitiful. His Lt. Gov., Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is just as big a jerk. (Note middle name) If she gets elected, she will get more gun laws enacted at every chance she gets.

The bullet used was a .223, so likely this guy used an AR15 or similar evil military weapon("more coals on the fire" eh). The news makes it out like the person is using a common hunting round and weapon. Maybe they are right, lots of varminters use .223 for short range work. But the tone leads me to believe that the next legislation will be aimed at getting rid of hunting weapons or outlawing such lethal bullets. As a minimum it sounds like they are blaming all hunters for this tragedy. They say the shooter is a good shot. Perhaps marksmanship training should be outlawed, afterall if he couldn't aim, none of these innocents would have got hurt.

Of course we all know this fellow is sick in the head, so I am sure if he is caught, that he should just get proper psychiatric treatment and then be release to society as a productive human being. Makes me feel noble all inside.

I for one am for the death penalty(I know, terrbily not PC). If a person like this is caught and proven to be guilty, we should eliminate such abberations from human society. He is sick, like a mad dog, and like mad dogs, should be done away with. Oooops, forgot, we don't get rid of bad animals anymore, it's not their fault.

Sorry about my bad attitude. It makes me cringe whenever one of these type shootings happen because of the feeding frenzy of the way PC crowd. Logic has nothing to do with gun legislation it seems, just the emotion of the moment. I pray for those who were killed or hurt, and I pray we catch the perp and give "due justice".

Just my opinion, at least for now we are legally entitled to that.

The only solution is to rid society of these type people (murderers).
That can be done by teaching morals and values starting from pre kindergarten, reducing the violence and other sanctity-of-life diminishing influences to children in society (TV, Movies, Schools, etc).

Secondly, for those who won't adhere to humane policies, very firm, swift justice.

I believe, from the limited information I have read about the sniper, that he is probably:
1 - A fundamenalist terrorist or extreme psycho.
2 - A route person, delivery person, taxi driver, district inspector, etc, who works from his vehicle Monday thru Friday.
3 - Will (unfortunately) shoot 3 - 5 more people before being caught. I hope I'm wrong ont this.
4 - Will be caught in the next few weeks.
5 - Will NOT get the death penalty because of mental retardation, plea bargaining, or other lame excuse.

Finally, tracing ammo back to where it is purchased would work for an amateur possibly, but "roll-your-own" is too easy (and fun) to make this a sure thing.

Hopefully, there are enough level-headed people who know that passing more gun control legislation not only does not help, but it acutally hurts the situtation because it diverts attention from actions which could, in time, help.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Oct-02 AT 01:09 PM (EST)]We have seen recently (9-11) where deterence is not always effective: there are those who are willing to die to carry out their "mission".
We see daily that making something illegal does not stop the act from occuring.
We have seen where outlawing, or banning an item does not preclude its presence and usage by society.
We see where punishment and "rehabilitation" do not preclude the punished nor the "rehabilitated" from once again returning to their criminal acts.
It is a sad fact that as humans we live in a world populated not only by nice, honest, respectful people, but by sick, evil, deranged, individuals as well.
I know it is a philosophical (bordering on religious) point, but there is good and there is evil, and we shall never change that.
As for the individual(s) responsible; no punishment, and I do mean NO PUNISHMENT WHATSOEVER could be too extreme for what they have done. But alas, our system does not allow for that. If they die while attempting to be captured or die as a result a trial and death sentence, they will have gotten off realtively easily.
I have to remind myself that our system - imperfect as it is -establishes laws and punishments, so I am obliged to live accordingly. I trust God to meet out ultimate justice as He sees fit. He did say "Vengance is mine" - so I'll trust him on that one.

My problem with banning firearms, is the fact that a firearm is merely a tool which evil people use to carry out evil acts. Getting rid of guns won't stop people from killing. Just about any object on earth could possibly be used as a leathal weapon. Criminals will find new weapons (they'll be the ones who actually could be able to get guns after they've been banned) and honest citizens won't be able to defend themselves from said criminals.

I have heard talk of this being a terrorist activity. It seeems the FBI investigated recently Middle Eastern men shooting high powered rifles in some sand lots. I don't know much about this, whether it is conjecture, rumor, or fact, but it sounds like it could be a terrorist activity. Anybody else hear or learn of this? Also if this is true, I feel sorry for Arabs and Middle Easterners in this country. There will be a backlash against them like we have never seen in this country. It will generate intense suspicion with regard to these citizens. When terrorist take diliberate aim individually upon children only, there will be hell to pay for sure. All innocent victims are important, but somehow individually executing innocent children goes over the edge into a hell all its own. It gets my dander up and makes me feel no mercy for this type of slimeball. I am not a violent person but I think I could pull the switch on that vermin.

Since I own a Ruger Mini 14(223 caliber) the observation i would make is that when fired this rifle makes avery loud pop.....given this fact it would seem obvious that the shooter has to pick a rather isolated location from which to fire his weapon(he probably has a silencer) too both hide the pop as well as to remain relatively unnoticed while he sights the victim which means he maybe firing from inside the confines of a parked vehicle , but he still has to have a clear field of fire-----it would seem that those locations would be relatively few in number and therefore easily scouted by law enforcement personnel----so why are people still being shot is my basic question??????? fd

----so why are people
>still being shot is my basic question??????? fd

Because the person doing it is not stupid. Meaning they have thought this out and probably have a list of locations already picked. I can understand the parents escorting the kids to the school today but I'd bet a $100 that they will not shoot there again. They will go somewhere else.

If they do have a silencer on the rifle then they have already broken gun laws on the books. I doubt the libs will accept that. The 223 is one of the few guns that putting a silencer on it has little impact on it's accuracy. I also really doubt that they are shooting from a car. However the police will know if the person is shooting from a high or low place based on where the victims were hit.

At some point this person is going to make a mistake. The more people they shoot, the more likely they are to get caught. I am not happy about this but that is my take on it.

They will be caught

and if they are caught by the public the police will never have to deal with them.

What I forgot was to include in my statement was that the locations -"around schools" would be relatively limited in number ----obviously if you are including the region in TOTO there aren't enough law enforcement personnel to provide converage so under those circumstances the shooter can operate at will.............I would still bet that the shooter is firing from inside a vehicle of some kind to facilitate a rapid evacuation from the immediate area as the response time will become much faster than when he first started......fd

Not necessarily a marksman?

I dont think this guy would have to be a marksmen, he just knows what he's doing, and there are many ways u can silence a gun, homemade ways, and an AR-15 of any make will most likely be able to hit a 6 inch target (most of the shots were head right?) out of the box, but im guessing this guy has a scope, so if he knows how to site in a gun, aim a little high, im sure a guy w/ tactical training could do this without being a marksman, just my opinion

I am weary of trying to think what will come next. I know the liberals of this country will do the liberal thing again, and decent people will suffer for their whining. It seems to be the new American Thing - look after the bad guy, and take it out on the law abiding person.

My thoughts on the sniper: He is not very well trained, but well enough, and wishes to create terror. I can think of a few countries who would happily provide the limited training, and the firearm. I would bet when they are caught, a lame report will rationalize the incidents, make excuses, and further misleading of the populace will occur.

I am worried about all this mindlessness that assails us, when will it stop - nothing the knee jerking liberals do makes an impact in crime, so we will suffer more stupid reaction, and more lies, etc..

not much of a future is it.

Any of you truck owners NOT a member of the NRA? If not, stop sitting on the fence, look at what is happening, and Join the NRA.

As for the NRA, I have been a member off and on most of my adult life, as well as a junior member as a kid. I have gotten so very tired of their constant begging for money, and some of their more radical positions, I will not rejoin again. They are worse than TV evangelists for $$$ begging....
