BrianA: I certainly get what you mean. I am not by any means insulted. You write some very convincing ideas. But I still think that a society is defined by the way it treats its citizens, both good and bad. I don't mean to own the high moral ground on this but rather share it with other sensible and intelligent ideas. Please check the poll I just posted.

I would like to read the court case on this. Three counts - there is more to that case than reads through journalism. There are more facts to that case than what is printed there. But yes, it proves what I do mean. The only way they government could make this work is to start small - one case in small cities at a time - and work their way from there. But the problem is there are so many people in this country that feel the same way you and I both feel - we will never surrender our firearms for any reason. And if the government tried to ban and seize the firearms, what do you think would happen? Who will enforce this law? Who will be sent to jail for abstruction of justice and where will they be held?

CobraXP: It would probably end up along the lines of the drug prohibition. A very unstable society would ensue if the government attempted to do this. Surely a much more Facist society than we have today.

I agree. Unfortunately, I believe it will take some harsh reactions by the citizens of this country before we see the better side of this saga to create a better social atmosphere than we have let our country become.

So, we're against consental suicides (Dr. Kavorkian's field), but yet, you can go out, commit a serious crime, and we'll do it anyways in a gas chamber or by electricutian (Did I spell that right)?? America will even pay for it?!! Come on!! What's really going on.

I think the media has EVERYTHING to do with this crap. Ever since september of last year, all the media displays is who shot who, who's ripping off who, yadda yadda. We are just tearing our country apart.

Look! Everyone's losing jobs, big companies are being auditted (and getting busted, N'Sync member gets an oral from Brittney Spears (how much info do they think we need??), which celebrity is in a drug or alcohol rehab. Boy, I can't survive without knowing who's doing who or what!@

Have you noticed! The more media coverage of crimes, the more are committed? What does it take to make the papers or a spot on tv? Is this why this person is on a killing spree? This is very sick. Forget the execution, let's have a public hanging.

Did I mention I'm suing the neighbor for spilling coffee on my driveway, since someone can sue over smoking all their life!! HELLO! No wonder why other countries are laughing at us. We are so dysfunctional right now, it's disgusting!

Even the tv shows, reality tv (they make me real sick). Hey dad, let's have a sleepover for halloween, and watch "American Criminal Idol", starring your host O.J Simpson, and Uncle Charlie Manson! It'll be a real slaughter!!

As for G.W., I think his true ambition, was to live in the old west and play cowboys and indians! HA!

Wow, guess I've been pretty cranky towards the press, and all the negativity these days. Sorry if I offended anyone, didn't mean to.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 05:04 AM (EST)]Going back to the orginal post, if someone were to ask me how I feel about gun control now I would tell them I feel no different now than what I have always felt. I might ask them about gun laws in MD. As I understand it MD has some of the mose restrictive gun laws in the country. Did those gun laws keep this creep from using a gun? Why not?If gun control were such a good thing than how come it's not working back there? Do you think criminals will obay the law and turn in their guns? And if law abiding citizens have to give up their right to lawful gun ownership, who is left with the guns? And if these criminals come into your home armed with a gun how would you defend yourself? Why is this guy seeking his prey in an area where citizens are not allowed to defend themselves with the best possible means against an armed attack? Do you think he knows something about gun laws? In a heightened state of alert everybody will be looking out for this guy. If people were allowed to carry handguns either conceled or openly do you think this guy would be so bold? Criminals like this will pick easy targets. They operate in an area where he is least likely to get caught. If people are allowed to own and carry guns for self defense do you think there will me more or less easy targets? If you lived in that area right now would you feel safer if you could carry a gun to protect yourself? Given the choice between owning a gun for self denfense or submission to a violent act which would you choose? If you were to see this guy taking aim at his next victim and you had a gun, would you use it to stop this guy before he gets off his next shot? And if you don't have a gun what will you do? I think the best way to defend our 2nd amendment rights is to point out the flaws of gun control. Common sense questions without degrading the person who feels otherwise. Ask questions that hopefuly make them think about their answer. Don't limit your response to just ratteling off a bunch of statistics. Make it personal. Point out the positive ways guns help deter crime. Point out that those who wish to take away our rights are also giving up their own. If I want to limit your freedom of speech I also limit my own. Who is responsible for you and your family's safty? Do you trust the police more that you trust yourself? If you want to make me defenseless you also make yourself defenseless. Think about it.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 10:29 AM (EST)]I also agree that gun control laws could not prevent what has happened. Laws are for the law-abiding. That is why we have criminals. They don't obey the laws and run the risk of being caught and punished. The sad thing is, we don't have any reasonable means of deterring crime. All we have is crime, then punishment.
If all of those victims had been carrying guns, they would be just as dead. Being armed only helps when you know your attacker and you see him (or her) coming, and you are properly prepared with weapon drawn and loaded. I am not saying people shouldn't be armed, but we don't need another reason for a bunch of lunatics to start carrying guns. This would be likened to the folks of the 50's, all building bomb shelters from the panic and fear that overtook them. Some things cannot be prevented. This snipers attacks could not have been prevented, but he can be stopped. Eventually, he will make a mistake, and it will end.
