i have a 2005 excursion diesel 4x4 that has developed an intermittent problem with shifting out of park. i have to push the brake pedal almost through the floor to get the transmission out of park. sometimes i have to push and release a couple times. the frequency seems to be increasing, but still is not constant. Master cylinder? shift interlock solenoid? electrical?
I would venture to say it's your brake light switch located on the brake pedal shaft. I've replaced on on an expedition & repaired on a Mustang. Same symptoms. No problems with my Ex though.

x2. I had the same problem on my Expy...they designed the wires to run behind the brake pedal without enough room so the wires "flexed" every time I hit the brakes...eventually wearing them out at the switch connector.
I fixed it by pulling the connector off of a 150 and splicing it in to be long enough to secure with no flexing. I would imagine the same fix could be applied here. I never took time to check my Excursion...better do that tomorrow!
