I thought about putting cardboard in the front of the engine. Wouldn't that cause the engine to overheat?
Yes it would if you cover over the entire radiator. All you need is enough to cover ~ 1/2 or less to knock down the airflow. Keep an eye on the coolant temperature to adjust up or down on the size to find the sweet spot for your truck/engine combo. Next time you might try posting in the correct forum for your model year truck.
My 2008 F250 blows cold air during the winter. Yet, when it gets above 40 degrees outside, it kicks on. Mine is a 6.4L Turbo diesel. I thought about putting cardboard in the front of the engine. Wouldn't that cause the engine to overheat?
The 08-10 is a little different for sticking cardboard in. Don't forget you have your inter-cooler right in front, other coolers around it... not just the radiator. Careful what you cover up, and how much, it all needs flow through it, the whole system....
I never used one, I had a 2010 and never needed one, but they used to make winter covers for the front grill on the outside. Insulated, mesh, various types. As Randy above said, best to head to the right forum and ask what guys are using there. The fact you need one also makes me think you may have another issue going on, 40f isn't very cold.
