Cold Weather Oil

I just moved from Texas to the Denver area and need to change my oil. What is the best oil for cold temps?

Assuming you have a gas engine, I would definitely go with a synthetic oil during winter. They flow much more freely than dino, which helps with cold starts.

If it is the 6.0L in your profile 5W40 would be best. They get a little bitchy with 15w40 under 20*F.

Popular choice (as mentioned earlier) 5-40 synthetic. Lots of guys like to run Rotella T-6. It's easier on the injectors during cold starts. On a side note, using a fuel additive like Diesel Kleen (white bottle) keeps the fuel for gelling in cold temp, also good for your injector.

I use 10w30 semi synthetic because its a lot cheaper than full synthetic 5w40. It definitely sounds better when I first fire it up in the morning (compared to 15w40) and I think it idles quieter too, but that might just be in my head.

Yeah, stuffs not cheap. Cheapest I've found it, is at Wally World for $22/gal as compared to almost $28/gal at Autozone. I'll usually buy a gallon here and there over the course of a few weeks prior to changing my oil, that way I don't get hit with sticker shock.

One other thing, it's important to use OEM oil filters. Lots of threads here regarding the topic, just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Here's a good place to buy filters at a reasonable price.

Also, watch your fuel up there. Use Diesel Kleen in the white bottle this time of year, it has anti-gel in it. Plugging your truck in will also make it happy!

I went to the local dealership this past Friday to get some oil and filters (oil and fuel). Told the guy I wanted Motorcraft 10w/40 (or was it 15w/40 - whatever the manual said). He goes to the computer and comes back saying the computer recommends 10w/30 for this time of year. I was flabbergasted. I live in Virginia and our winters are not bad, this winter is especially mild (so far). I don't think we have had any days/nights below +20 degrees F. Has anyone else experienced this recommendation? Do I need to avoid this parts person? I stuck with the 10 or 15w/40.

Ford recommends the following (updated after the manual was published):

Below 20*F use a 5W40 or a 10W30. The 15W40 (and of course the 5W40) should be OK above 20*F

Above 50*F use a 5W40 or a 15W40.

The 5W40 is a GREAT all-around oil. Ford didn't recommend it at first because they did not have one that they sold.

All of the local dealerships around me have been recommending 10w-30 for the last three years or so. It is a much cheaper alternitive to 5w-40, the cold flow viscosity between the two are almost identical. I'm in NW OH and have been using 10w-30 all year around for the last 55,000 mi. or so with zero issues.
My guess is that Ford must have sent the northern dealers a TSB regarding hard cold starts and started recommending 10w-30, although it was already in the owners manual everyone has the mindset "if its a diesel it needs 40wt." Prior to 15w-40 becoming the "norm" 15 or so years ago all we ever ran in all of our diesel engines was straight 30wt.
All of the viscosities mentioned "will work" in your region, with the 10w-30/5w-40 providing easier cold starts, and they will be much easier on your injectors.
