Local guy that did mine charged just over $500 for everything. According to him it "would have went forever" just been noisy doing it.
If I could find a reliable shop that would fix it for $500 I would do the repair in a heartbeat. Just returned from a trip to Oregon, lots of I-5 and some US 101 from Tillamook to Astoria, and a few Oregon state highways. Enough driving at the speeds where the howl is the worst that I now know I will be looking for a fix sooner rather than later. I am leaning toward a shop named Transend in Auburn, WA. They specialize in Transmission and differential repair as the name indicates. Any Puget Sound members who might be familiar with Transend your comments would be appreciated.
Lots of rain the entire trip, so it got a good wet check, no leaks with subsequent electrical problems that some owners have reported.
I took ours on the highway yesterday, man did it sound bad. I have my friend, an ex-ford mechanic of 14 years getting me an estimate put together for the rear end rebuild along with new u joints and plugs (I've gotten lazy in my old age). Hopefully I'll have it fixed by the first week of next month.

I went to a shop in Everett today for a checkout. The shop is "Randy's Ring and Pinion. The good news is they recommended I wait until it sounds more like imminent failure. He gave me an estimate of $1200. The bad news, he couldn't warrant that the new ring and pinion wouldn't also be noisy, even the Yukon gear set. Now I'm back to square one. D-Cell Mekanick I hope you have good luck with your rebuild. I'll be interested in hearing about the outcome.
