I have a 1989 F150 4x4 4.9l 5spd. It has automatic locking hubs and it isn't full time 4wd. I noticed the other day that the driver's side hub is a little loose so I plan on replacing it and repacking or replacing the wheel bearings as well as replacing the brakes if needed, and possibly even the ball joints and u joints since I'm there. I was wondering if I could change the auto locking hubs to manual locking hubs. What would I need to do in order to do that?
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-u-joints.html Here is a good writeup on doing the ball joints and axle shaft universal joints.
Just get a Warn or Milemarker manual locking hub kit and replace the auto hubs at the same time.
Plenty of good info if you do a search here.
Going to Manual hubs would be the best thing you could do for reliability and strength. My Automatic hubs on my old 89 f150 were constantly leaving me high and dry until I swapped to Manual lockouts. You might need the adapter kit in addition to the hubs, your local auto parts store should know what kit Im referring to. Good luck.
Going from auto hubs to manuals is probably one of the easiest and beneficial upgrades you can do and simple at that. You have more reliability...a positive lock and also when you go from forward to reverse or vice-versa you don't have the time delay as you would have with the autos having to unlock and then relock.
